Patrick popped the question to Cristina at Airlie, and afterward, their dogs joined them for a few photos too, making the celebration even sweeter.

A little piece of movie history took flight right here at Airlie.

Long before Fly Away Home reached the big screen, Airlie served as a home base for Dr. Bill Sladen’s research into the migration patterns of trumpeter swans and Canada geese, the real world work that helped inspire the beloved late ’90s film starring Anna Paquin and Jeff Daniels.

While the movie itself wasn’t filmed at Airlie, part of the story behind it began here, among the fields and open skies of the Virginia countryside.
