Early this morning, several members and officers of Potomac Lodge No. 5 had the honor of commemorating the sacrifice of our departed Brother, White House Police Officer Leslie Coffelt, who died on this day in 1950 while in the line of duty. Brother Coffelt, having been shot three times, took aim and thwarted the attempted assassination of President Harry S. Truman outside the Blair House on Pennsylvania Avenue. A sobering and moving tribute was delivered by the Uniformed Division of the US Secret Service (formerly the White House Police), Chief Michael Buck and Deputy Director Ronald Rowe, with members of the Coffelt family in attendance. We humbly thank our departed Brother for his service to our Nation and to the Craft.

We remember the life of Queen Elizabeth along with our Brothers in Britain, where our Craft began. We also cherish the memory of Queen Elizabeth laying the cornerstone of the British Embassy annex building with the George Washington Gavel in 1957 alongside Freemasons of Potomac Lodge No. 5. The Grand Lodge of Washington DC will take part in four parades on July 4th around the District. Masons that would like to participate are encouraged to connect with the Grand Secretary or their mother lodges.

We do love ceremony. This is a 1932 parade at the reenactment of the laying of the Capitol corner stone...you will not have to wear these outfits.

Tomorrow we welcome special guest Alonza Tehuti Evans, the Special Grand Historian, Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of D.C. to our lodge.

The United States Week Of Remembrance honoring those lost or impacted by the tragedy of the Holocaust was this past week. You may find Freemasons wearing this pin still today. We stood with our Jewish brothers then and we stand with them now. The pin is small gesture signifying that we remember and will never forget.

We would be remiss at if on Valentine’s Day we did not think of Valentine Reintzel. He was the first RWM of the Grand Lodge of Washington DC, a Potomac man, and the recipient of the George Washington Gavel from President George Washington himself. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Queen Elizabeth II marks 70 years on the Throne this week. So we fondly look back to October 19, 1957 when her Royal Highness layed the foundation stone at the British Embassy’s new Chancery just minutes from our Lodge. The longest reigning Queen used the George Washington Gavel which also helped lay the cornerstone of the Capitol. History abounds at Potomac!
