This weekend marked two years since the arrest of ten veterans of the civil war - military and guerrilla veterans who came together in 2020 to form the Alliance for a Peaceful El Salvador - and of university student and communications volunteer for the group, Luis Menjivar.

For years the Alliance for a Peaceful El Salvador helped mobilize peaceful protests denouncing the Bukele government’s attacks on democracy and human rights and the achievements of the 1992 Peace Accords (which demilitarized Salvadoran society and brought an end to decades of dictatorial rule).

Two years ago, in the lead up to the inauguration of Nayib Bukele’s unconstitutional second term, these men were lured out of their homes and have been imprisoned since on unsubstantiated accusations that they were plotting violent attacks in protest.

June 14 is the upcoming deadline on their pre-trial detention. We call for their immediate release on humanitarian grounds because they suffer from complicated chronic illnesses.

Join us in contacting your members of Congress, several made public statements calling for their immediate release release of another beloved political prisoner, Ruth Lopez and today we are calling for and to US support for this regime!

The Committee of Family Members of Politically Persecuted and Imprisoned People Comité Cofappes gathered yesterday, outside of the prison where the civil war veterans who led the Alliance for a Peaceful El Salvador have been held without trial for two years now to demand their release and to send them messages of solidarity through the prison walls ✊🏽

This week Nayib Bukele’s government launched a campaign to promote the removal of the country from the International Labor Organization (ILO) “short list”.

Rather than working to address the widespread and increasing violations to workers rights under its mandate, the Bukele government argues that the removal will help bring investment and more employment to the country.

While some unions head to Geneva to accompany the Minister of Labor at 114th session of the International Labour Conference taking place from June 1-12, many others denounce the move and call on the international community to not abandon Salvadoran workers as El Salvador’s inclusion on the ILO short list remains one of the only mechanisms that Salvadoran workers and organized labor can turn to to hold the government to account.

Join us in learning more, sharing info and uplifting the demands of Salvadoran workers to keep El Salvador on the ILO short list!

Today, our hearts are with Ruth Lopez and her loved ones. We join in the global outrage of her unjust arrest and imprisonment and also join the global call for her immediate release!

We honor Ruth’s work for so many reasons:

✅ She was one of the first and most vocal human rights defenders denouncing the mass violations under the Bukele regime’s State of Exception ❤️‍🔥.

✅ Ruth accompanied the legal fight against the Bukele regime’s move to bring metal mining back to El Salvador.

✅ She worked for decades to defend democracy and government transparency.

We uplift her courage in denouncing the injustice of her arrest, calling on the arresting officers to have some decency and to recognize that one day, these unjust conditions will come to an end and demanding a public trial to prove her innocence.

Ruth Lopez is one of dozens of political prisoners in El Salvador, and today invite you to also take action to demand freedom for Ruth Lopez!

Go to CISPES.org/libertadpararuth to take action TODAY by contacting your members of Congress and ask that they speak out for Ruth and take action against continued U.S. security assistance to El Salvador while current conditions persist.

María Guardado: A Life of Poetry, Community, & Revolution
Saturday, May 16, 2026
6PM

Garment Worker Center
3610 San Pedro St.
Los Angeles, CA 90011

Join CISPES L.A. in commemorating and honoring the life and work of the unstoppable revolutionary Salvadoran activist and poet, Maria Guardado, on the 11th anniversary of her passing. The evening will consist of a presentation of her organizing journey, her transnational framework, her activism in Los Angeles, and will feature her poems of strength, resilience, resistance and historical memory. Following the presentation, Salvadoran activist, poet, and dear friend or María, Rossana Pérez, will do a special performance of poetry dedicated to María.

Maria Guardado is part of many underrepresented militant Salvadoran women who have put their lives on the line for the liberation of their country, and their persistence in fighting against U.S imperialism, capitalism, and colonization, regardless of their location, through activism and poetry. So please join us in remembering her life and her work in community!
