Raymond turned 70 - and he loved it! We had a great birthday celebration /Amazonia in Blagden Alley (between 9th and 10th Streets NW). Ceviche, Pork Belly, Pulpo (octopus), Chaufa (fried rice) and Lomo Saltado (wagyu beef with veggies). And, of course, a couple of lovely bottles of wine!

Now that we have both attained the Biblical age of three score and ten, we intend to continue the celebration - no special occasion needed. This is a GREAT time of life and we're loving it.

AND, as we have for the last 23 years, we are loving sharing this beautiful time of our lives with all of you!

I received this wonderful video recently of a command performance recorded by guests - Monica and Mary Beth - of me reading "The King's Breakfast" by A. A. Milne. I think the poems of A. A. Milne are some of the best children's verse ever written. I highly recommend them for children and grandchildren of every age.

Every member of our family had favorite poems from this book.
This poem was my father's favorite. He was a bit like the King. He wasn't happy without butter. Enjoy!!

Hello friends!

I haven't posted anything on FB for a while, but something unusual happened last week that I thought you might want to know about.

A couple checked into the Guest House - which is NOT so unusual. They were elite members of one of the major hotel-chain rewards programs - BUT - they refuse to stay in any of that chain's hotels in DC.

WHY? Because ALL the hotels smell like pot.

It had never occurred to us to promote ourselves as a pot-free zone, but that is what we are. You will NEVER walk into the Guest House and smell a skunk.

🤣😎😁

Wishing you all a very belated Happy New Year and hope to see you in 2023!

We're EXCITED! We are going greener! At the suggestion of an enthusiastic guest, we have purchased a LOMI, and we're composting all of our coffee grounds, banana peels, eggshells, uneaten pancakes, (not many of those), and everything else we can put in the composter. And we're producing lovely dirt for use in the yard. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND this machine!

Pictures below:
1. The Lomi working quietly on the counter.
2. Waste collected during breakfast ready for composting.
3. A bucket of clean, good-smelling dirt for the yard.
4. A look inside the Lomi before we turn it on.

Hanging out on the porch on a lovely summer afternoon. It was, unfortunately, too early in the day for wine. (I have standards, you know! 😎)

You may recognize these ladies from photos on our website. Jane and Sue were both part of a earlier photo shoot and their smiling faces show up in my favorite porch and breakfast photos.

DC artist Sam Gilliam died this week, just as his retrospective exhibit at the Hirschhorn Gallery was opening. Raymond and I were given an amazing opportunity 30 years ago to acquire a beautiful piece by Sam Gilliam. It's an outfit - pantsuit, hat, shoes, gloves, and cape. The cape hangs on the wall of the former Embassy Circle Guest House, now our private residence. We're posting this photo in honor of Sam's life, his career, and his immense contributions to American art.

"Meet the Guests", another wonderful quilt by fiber artist Debra Banyas, has arrived in Woodley's dining room to join "Meet the Innkeepers", which is in the living room. In these times, it is absolutely essential to be a serious person - but one who doesn't take themselves too seriously. Or stated another way, humor is essential to life!
