From all of us at The Mayflower, we wish you a wonderful day celebrating Juneteenth! Here are a few of our favorite ways to celebrate in the District:
🎉 Visit the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture for their Juneteenth Community Day, honoring the life, legacy, and enduring impact of Ms. Opal Lee—affectionately known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”—as she celebrates her 100th birthday this year. Enjoy live dances & performances, workshops, crafts, and kid-friendly activities.
🎉 Join the Smithsonian's Anacostia Community Museum for its largest ever Juneteenth Freedom celebration, complete with live music, rollerblading, and family-friendly activities.
🎉 Stop by the US National Archives to see the original Emancipation Proclamation and its companion document, General Order No. 3, which granted freedom to the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas three years after the Proclamation was issued.
🎉 Take a quick Metro ride to The Go-Go Museum to discover the origins of DC’s iconic music genre, combining funk, R&B, hip-hop, and Afro-Latin rhythms.
