Sunset Resort of Washington Island, WI In 1902, Sunset Resort opened its doors and welcomed the first visitors. Today, the 4th, 5th and 6t All rooms have a private bath.

On June 22, 1902, Torger and Anna Engelson along with their four children opened Sunset Resort (then called Pine Beach Retreat) and welcomed the first guests. Today, the 4th, 5th and 6th generations are taking the best of what was learned from our ancestors, to give our guests the hospitality and serenity that has been enjoyed here for 112 years. ight as you watch sunsets, lake freighters, the moon and stars, and our ever-changing water and sky. Today’s amenities are tastefully blended with reminders of the past. Sunset Resort is situated on 500 feet of natural Green Bay shoreline, surrounded by forty acres of undeveloped woodlands with a marked nature trail. Sunset Resort has a natural beach area with a bonfire pit, docking facilities, and expansive lawns for your relaxation. The woods, water, and atmosphere of our Inn, will begin to set the pace for your Island stay. The dining room is open to the public, serving breakfasts daily from 8 to 11 am from mid-June through August, and on weekends in the Spring and Fall. We feature an array of homemade baked breads, Norwegian Grilled toast and our famous Icelandic pancakes. The Sunset Resort family hope that you find the peace and tranquility that our ancestors experienced so long ago.

Happy Birthday to my great-grandmother, Ingibjörg Jonsdóttir Einarson, born 10.31.1865 in Stóru-Borg on the south coast of Iceland. She emigrated in 1887 and came to Washington Island where she married Kristofer Einarson in 1888. She died shortly after giving birth to her 7th child in 1901. Sadly, she was only 35 years old when she died. Five children lived to adulthood and many, many Islanders can trace their lineage back to her.
On the left is one of the earliest pix we have ... it might date from their wedding in 1888. The pic of Ingibjorg is probably from the late 1890s.
