New ferry winter schedule starts today. Only 4 boats a day.

And don't forget to make a reservation to bring a car over in the winter.

The Washington Island Ferry is a vital, year-round mode of transportation, crossing Death’s Door passage on the way to the island.

We've always admired the story of islander & ferry owner Robert Noble. It shows just how resilient people can be in the face of overwhelming challenges. And it shows what it took to be an islander in the 19th century!

Have you read out our fleet, including the ferry Robert Noble? This ferry was built in Sturgeon Bay in 1979 by Peterson Builders and can carry 19 autos and 149 passengers.

The ferry is named for a 25-year-old man who survived Death’s Door’s icy waters in 1864 and later became the owner and operator of the first ferry in Door County.

The Lodge is our original family cabin, built by us - an insurance executive, a writer, their six teen and young adult kids and just enough professionals to make sure it was built correctly, albeit on a shoestring budget.

Built in 1980, the Lodge is sturdy yet a little quirky. It tends to need more work in the way of updates in part because of the aforementioned age and crew, but it’s solid, homey and the epitome of a relaxing retreat, and 45 years later, we still love it.
