Congratulations to our very own Isabella on this much deserved recognition!
Emerging Hospitality Leader Award Winner: Isabella Santoro
Northside Diner, Washington
When Isabella Santoro and her husband, Ed, opened Northside Diner in Washington, they weren’t just reviving an iconic spot—they were honoring its legacy. The former home of Winga’s Café, a community favorite since 1928, the restored space reflects Isabella’s passion for history and hospitality. It features original tin ceilings, brick walls, and vintage décor, including Winga’s original soda fountain.
Having grown up in Italy, Isabella is inspired by a love of community and vibrant hospitality experiences. Her menu combines classic comfort foods—like smash burgers and tenderloin sandwiches—with her personal favorites, such as falafel bowls and kombucha on tap. The unique “book clock,” crafted from book covers with titles that include visible numbers, and wall art made from library books repurposed from the now-closed Iowa Wesleyan college, is a visible nod to her love of literature and creativity.
A dedicated community advocate, Isabella has also secured grants for public art and local projects. “If I want Washington to be a certain way, I can’t wait for someone else to do it,” she concludes.
For her commitment to blending history and hospitality with innovation, Isabella Santoro is being honored as the 2024 Iowa Restaurant Association’s Emerging Leader.
