On this day, 116 years ago, while being piloted by Glenn Curtiss, U.S. Army Lieutenant Jacob E. Fickel fired a rifle at a target from an altitude of 100 feet above Sheepshead Bay Racetrack, NY. This would be the first shot fired from an airplane, signaling the birth of combat aviation.

New York slavery ended on July 4, 1827! July 4, 1863 saw smashing victories at Vicksburg and Gettysburg! And on July 4, 1908, Glenn Curtiss flew the June Bug for almost a mile in Pleasant Valley! Happy 250th Independence Day!

While visiting the Finger Lakes, be sure to stop by the Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport.

On June 22, 1914, sixteen year-old Katherine Masson christened Glenn Curtiss’s flying boat “America” with Great Western champagne. “America” was designed, but not yet ready, for a transatlantic flight. But six days later Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, and suddenly the world was at war. “America” became the prototype for wartime seaplanes, engaged in scouting, bombing runs, and anti-submarine warfare. A far larger Curtiss flying boat would fly the Atlantic in 1919.

Happy 250th America!!
