Wait… THAT’S Bass River?! 🤯🌊

Pull up a map of Cape Cod and look at Bass River.

Most people know the part around West Dennis, but follow the water north and you’ll realize just how extensive this system actually is.

And despite its name, Bass River isn’t your typical freshwater river. It’s a tidal estuary, connected directly to Nantucket Sound and heavily influenced by the ocean tides.

It’s one of those things that’s been sitting in plain sight the entire time.

Think you’ve seen every lighthouse on Cape Cod?

Probably not this one.

Long before the Bass River Lighthouse was built, one local man—Warren Crowell—would climb into his attic every evening and light a lantern in his window to help guide fishing boats safely home.

The light became so important that local sea captains helped pay for the kerosene to keep it burning.

Eventually, in 1855, the government replaced that lantern with one of Cape Cod’s most unique lighthouses…
