"While passing through our Service Shop today, I stopped to see a major engine replacement our technician Desmond Gross was assigned. The diagnosis on a 2012 Sprinter was the engine be replaced ($15,000). I asked Desmond how it was going, and he indicated that after removing the engine and transmission, and he separated them, he discovered the issue was the connection of the transmission to the engine. The transmission had been replaced in another state several months ago and connecting parts should have been replaced at that time. Bottom line - no new engine required, and a substantial cost saving to this Customer (yet a reduced income for Desmond).
