On August 20th, 1886, Company M of the First United States Cavalry arrived in Yellowstone to manage and protect the world’s first national park. The beautiful, red-roofed buildings of Fort Yellowstone at Mammoth Hot Springs are just one testament to the success of their efforts. Before enjoying the sturdy and warm quarters of Fort Yellowstone, the soldiers endured five cold winters in temporary structures dubbed Camp Sheridan, at the base of Mammoth Hot Springs. All of Camp Sheridan is now gone, but the national park idea is going strong—thanks in part to the efforts of the US Army in Yellowstone.
