🌠 Halley's Comet is passing overhead this week

The Orionid meteors are tiny pieces of Halley's Comet burning up in our atmosphere, and they peak this week. Westcliffe is Colorado's first International Dark Sky Community — no city glow up here, just the Sangres and the sky.

The honest local read: peak night Wednesday looks cloudy, with showers moving in. But the Orionids run strong for several nights, and Tuesday night is forecast mostly clear — so Tuesday night is our window. After the moon sets and before dawn, when the sky is darkest, that's when to look up: 10 to 20 meteors an hour under skies this dark.

Late fall at the creek is gold light, empty trails — the Rainbow Trail starts right at our door — a frozen hush on the pond in the morning, and a big warm log home at the end of the day. November is the locals' favorite month up here, and our November weekends are still open. Thanksgiving is already spoken for, so if you want in, don't wait.
