It’s named Office Covered Bridge because it connected the lumber mill across the river with the mill office in town. The mill office is now the Westfir Lodge!
Oregon's longest covered bridge was never built for tourists. It was built for logs. 🌲
The Office Bridge spans the North Fork of the Middle Fork Willamette River in the tiny mill town of Westfir, and at 180 feet it is the longest covered bridge in the state. It went up in 1944 for the Westfir Lumber Company, later run by Edward Hines Lumber Co, to carry log trucks and mill workers across the river to the office and the mill grounds on the other side, which is exactly where its plain, practical name comes from.
What makes the bridge unusual is the layout inside. Rather than one shared lane, it has a full vehicle roadway and a separate covered walkway just for people, so millworkers could cross safely on foot while loaded log trucks rumbled through beside them. Today the truck traffic is gone, and the bridge carries hikers, cyclists, and drivers exploring the Aufderheide Scenic Byway into the Cascades instead.
It has been documented by the Library of Congress' Historic American Engineering Record as one of the significant covered bridges left in the state. Have you ever driven or walked across a working covered bridge like this one?
