Post #4 - Why have Shake the Lake?

We recognize the importance of keeping Boulder Lake a safe, healthy, invasive-species controlled lake for all to use. However, to fulfill that mission, funds are needed.

Here's the current reason why....

The Board and members of the Invasive Species Committee have identified new, rapid growth of Eurasian Watermilfoil. Some of the growth is in areas previously surveyed, and we've discovered new (albeit small) amounts of growth in previous EWM-free areas.

The Board has met and authorized a new engineering survey of the lake, to take place hopefully in the next month or so. This is the mandatory first step towards applying for treatment permits and grants, which hopefully will take place in mid to late May of next year (optimum time for treatment).

We last treated problem areas in 2023, with 90-95% effectiveness. However, we will never be able to fully eliminate the EWM problem. The cost (after grants and cost-sharing) to our Assocation in 2023 was just shy of $8,000, and we suspect the cost to be roughly 20% higher this time around due to material cost increases. At that rate, this will nearly fully deplete our current bank balance of nearly $11,000 assuming the same level of treatment, which we're not sure of.

In speaking with some neighboring lake associations who have a much larger problem with Invasive Species/EWM, they are needing to spend tens of thousands of dollars, ANNUALLY, to combat the problem and keep the w**d matting down to a manageable level. Some have had to employ w**d harvestors. Some have been forced to convert to a Lake District, which is essentially a taxing authority. We're hoping to avoid all of that. But we need your help.

Shake the Lake is now our main fundraiser each year. Please help us by volunteering, donating, attending. Get to meet your neighbors. Help our Association keep the Lake strong, healthy, and AIS/EWM managed for future generations.
