At the factory high quality of workmanship was stressed. Any store receiving a garment which they thought was not of first quality they received a replacement without question. The Mill was very fortunate in having conscientious employees who had pride in their work and were anxious to produce a good garment. Compared to other factories, at the time, they had shorter working hours. Beginning in 1937 a bonus equal to two weeks of average earnings was paid. It was customary to distribute the bonus at a Christmas dinner given for the employees and at the same time plans for Mill operation for the next year were announced.
This covers the history of the Denton Mills from the beginning and through the 1940’s and into the period of the present ownership. There are some interesting facts related to the business during this earlier period which might be worthy of note to supplement the historical picture.
Sometime in the early 1930’s Mercury Mills of Hamilton, Ontario in Canada were licensed to manufacture Dentons, for the Canadian trade, on a royalty basis. Tis ended export problems to the wholesalers in that country.
