A busy highway has divided this landscape for more than 50 years.

Now, wildlife finally has a safer way across.

A new £3.7 million green bridge has opened over the A3 in Surrey, creating a dedicated crossing for animals while reconnecting habitats that have been separated since the 1970s.

Stretching 68 meters across one of the UK's busiest roads, the bridge is covered with native vegetation and specially designed to help wildlife move between two rare heathland areas.

Species expected to benefit include badgers, snakes, toads, insects, and countless other small animals that previously faced dangerous road crossings or became isolated from important habitat.

The project is especially significant because it supports lowland heathland, one of Britain's rarest ecosystems. Once widespread across southern England, much of this habitat has disappeared or become fragmented due to development and infrastructure.

Conservationists say habitat fragmentation is one of the biggest challenges facing wildlife populations today. Even when suitable habitat still exists, roads can create barriers that prevent animals from finding food, mates, and new territory.

Wildlife bridges help solve that problem by reconnecting landscapes that humans have unintentionally divided.

The Surrey crossing is believed to be the first bridge in the UK specifically designed to support lowland heathland wildlife on this scale.

It also provides access for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders, creating a shared corridor that benefits both people and nature.

For the animals using it, however, it is much more than a bridge.

It is a pathway back to parts of their world that have been cut off for decades.

Because of this, a decapitated cockroach can continue moving and living for about a week or more. Eventually, however, it dies not from the loss of its head itself, but because it can no longer drink water and eventually succumbs to dehydration. 💧🪳

In a groundbreaking study published in the journal Apidologie, Cornell University researchers revealed the discovery of an estimated 5.5 million bees living beneath the East Lawn Cemetery in Ithaca, New York.

Spanning roughly 1.5 acres, this subterranean metropolis is officially recognized as one of the largest bee aggregations ever documented in scientific literature.

While the sheer scale of the population is equivalent to more than 200 standard honeybee hives, the biological mechanics of this underground community are completely different from a typical social hive.

The insects were identified as Andrena regularis, commonly known as the "regular mining bee." Unlike social honeybees or bumblebees, mining bees are entirely solitary wild insects.

They do not serve a queen, nor do they build a shared, interconnected colony network of hives and tunnels.

Instead, each individual female acts independently, meticulously digging her own private underground nest burrow in the soil.

There, she constructs small chambers, provisions them with a mixture of pollen and nectar, and lays her eggs.

The phenomenon at East Lawn Cemetery is technically an aggregation rather than a singular super-colony. Millions of independent, solitary females have simply chosen to construct their individual burrows in the exact same location.

Historical records indicate that this massive population has inhabited the site since at least the early 1900s, thriving for over a century due to the cemetery’s highly favorable sandy soil, peaceful environment, and lack of pesticide use.

Emerging in early spring, these burrowing bees serve as vital native pollinators for local wild vegetation and regional agricultural assets, including the nearby Cornell apple orchards.
