Like walking into a painting 🎞️

There’s always something to see in all seasons, times of day, and types of weather—even on cloudy days when there aren’t sweeping mountain vistas, you get to see a different side of the park. Take your time and enjoy the view!

Going-to-the-Sun Road will be closing at 5pm today (Sunday, September 6th) from Avalanche to Jackson Glacier Overlook ahead of Monday’s predicted storm—plan your visit accordingly, and keep your rain gear with you if you’re planning on going out & about!

Fireweed is a marker of the end of summer—while you see blooms around the park during the summer, it’s not until August that it really puts on a show.

Early fireweed has blooms concentrated toward the bottom of the stem, and as the season progresses, blooms trend upward. As autumn approaches, cottony seeds are released (up to 80,000 seeds for a single plant!) and leaves start to turn red.

Fireweed is especially prolific on the east side of Glacier due to the 2015 Reynolds Creek fire that burned about 5,000 acres along the north shore of St Mary Lake. As a pioneer species, it’s one of the first plants to grow in burn scars.

Leave it better than you found it, for those who call the park home and for the future generations of stewards 🌲

That looks like:

🥾 staying on trail. What may look like a small puddle in a meadow to you is a whole world of microflora! From tiny wildflowers to mycelium networks to rehabilitation areas, staying on trail means you’re helping to preserve the flora of Glacier for future generations to enjoy.

🦌 respecting wildlife. Maintain a safe distance from wildlife—all of the clips here are zoomed in and filmed from a trail (or in a car, for the bear)! You can enjoy all sorts of fauna in the park from a distance, and you can get great photos without feeding wildlife.

🚮 leaving no trace. Pack it in, pack it out! Keep your trash with you or in your car—most of the larger pullouts around Glacier have bear-proof trash cans available. That also goes for orange peels, apple cores, and sunflower seeds (an orange peel can take six months to decompose!)

🌼 admiring without taking. Wildflowers and rocks are best kept where they’re at so other folks can enjoy them, too! A plucked wildflower bouquet will wilt in a car, but photos will last a lifetime.

📣 saying something if you see something. If you see someone littering, going off trail, or getting too close to wildlife, let them know!

🌲 respecting others. We’re all sharing the road, the trail, the air—a little kindness goes a long way. Slow down and enjoy the view—Glacier isn’t called the Crown of the Continent for nothing!

We’re incredibly fortunate to have so many wild spaces right in our backyard; let them be wild.

Yes, there are giant mountains and sweeping vistas, but there are also small slices of time that are easy to miss, which is why it’s great to go to the park at different times of day!

There are different wildflower blooms depending on the season and conditions, migratory birds make stopovers in & around the park, ephemeral waterfalls are only visible in spring runoff. There’s always something happening, you just have to look!
