Some moments in the Smokies can’t be planned — you just have to be ready. 🦌✨ Roger W Downes Photography tracked one of the largest bulls in the Oconaluftee area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. ⚠️ Elk Safety Reminder: Elk are wild animals and can be unpredictable, especially during the fall rut and spring calving seasons. Always keep a safe distance (at least 50 yards), never approach for a photo but use a telephone lens. Give them space to move freely — your safety and theirs depends on it.

BIG-TIME COLD BLAST AROUND THANKSGIVING!!

A major pattern change is on the table for Thanksgiving week, and confidence is growing. A strong blocking ridge over Alaska is opening the door for cross-polar flow, helping funnel the coldest air of the season southward.

We’ve also now confirmed a Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event, which often disrupts the polar vortex and sends Arctic air plunging into the lower latitudes. These events typically come in three waves:

• Wave 1: Arrives right around Thanksgiving
• Wave 2: First week of December
• Wave 3: Mid-December (often the strongest)

Each wave usually gets progressively colder and that has big implications for late November through Christmas.

Bottom line: Things are about to get very interesting between Thanksgiving and Christmas! Bundle up winter may be showing up early.
