This page has been receiving lots of views lately. Although Tim and I are no longer hosting at Big Springs, I am leaving this page up. There is still quite a bit of pertinent info, even if it is not current anymore. Much of it still applies. There is a lot of information in the albums.
Please be sure to double check with the appropriate folks if there is any question about something still being applicable.
The North Rim of the Grand Canyon, the North Kaibab Forest, and especially Big Springs Cabins and Fire will always hold a special place in our hearts. We miss everyone very much.
This is the 100th Birthday of Jacob Lake Inn. If you get the chance to stop by, wish them happy birthday from us and have a chocolate parfait cookie for me.

I know it's been forever since I've actually posted anything here. To be honest, my heart just hasn't been in it. 2020 was a difficult year for so many. There were many disappointed guests as Big Springs closed to the public due to Covid.

Unfortunately, Big Springs will remain closed to the public for the 2021 season. Fire crews will utilize the site for housing to provide social distancing for Covid maintenance and prevention. The Forest Service takes employee welfare very seriously and must utilize all measures available to ensure that welfare.

We all sincerely hope that 2022 will put us all in a better place regarding Covid and that Big Springs will once again open to serve the public.

In the meantime, please give some consideration to other options for enjoying all that the North Kaibab has to offer. Check out area campgrounds or give disperse camping a try. The forest and the Grand Canyon still have much to offer visitors.

Looking forward to better days for everyone.

Red Flag Conditions and Wind Return Tuesday

Incident meteorologists have alerted fire managers that fire weather conditions will deteriorate Tuesday including another red flag warning after 11 a.m. Ridgetop winds are to reach 35 miles per hour.

Fire activity was moderate Monday until late in the afternoon when winds and fuel aligned north of Jacob Lake, spotting fire across bulldozer lines. Fire lines were successfully defended around the rest of the fire with the Sunday’s spot fire near Little Mountain still burning however firefighters were able to keep it within newly constructed containment features.

Today firefighters will attempt to tie yesterday’s spot fire near Lefever overlook into the perimeter. Jacob Lake structure protection resources will continue working around the community. Around the rest of the perimeter, efforts to secure fire’s spread near Little Mountain will continue. Crews will patrol, hold, and improve less active sections of the line to the south.

Closures: Highway 89A is closed from Marble Canyon to Fredonia. Highway 67 from Jacob Lake to the Grand Canyon National Park is also closed. Due to the road closures, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park is presently inaccessible. The U.S. Forest Service has closed the entire fire area to entry.

Restrictions: Kaibab National Forest has implemented Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. For a full list of prohibitions, please visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/kaibab/alerts-notices/?aid=58061

Temporary Flight Restrictions: Temporary flight restrictions (TFR) are in effect around the entire fire area. Remember, that temporary flight restrictions also apply to unmanned aircraft systems (drones). If you fly, we can’t!

Jacob Lake More Secure While Fire Jumps Lines Near Mangum Camp

Risk remains for the Jacob Lake community but has diminished. Previous fuel treatments conducted by the local Ranger District Office have aided in moderating fire behavior allowing firefighters time to continue improving defensible space around the community. A night shift continued their work.

The fire spotted across containment lines along Forest Road 22 yesterday near Mangum Springs and raced north into grass, brush, and pinon/juniper towards Middle Mountain. Air tankers, including the Very Large Air Tanker, quickly responded with retardant to limit its growth.

Today crews will continue to construct fireline to minimize the fire’s northward movement northeast of highway 89A. Crews will work to attempt to secure fire’s spread near Little Mountain. Forecast weather includes less wind, but dry conditions, high temperatures, and low humidity.

Closures: Highway 89A is closed from Marble Canyon to Fredonia and Highway 67 to the Grand Canyon. The U.S. Forest Service has closed the entire fire area.

Afternoon update for June 14, 2020

Fire activity is high and we are not out of the woods yet!

The community of Jacob Lake is more secure due to ongoing work for structure protection. Yesterday crews conducted burnout operations around structures and utilized large air tankers for retardant drops. As of this morning, no structures had been lost in the Jacob Lake area.
