The spirited matriarch of the Dames Inn By Mark Holmberg • Photographs by Rick Riccozi If central casting searched for a haunted house in Wilmington, 1519 Princess St. likely would not jump out and grab them. Karen, Shea and I would like to send a HUGE shoutout to Patricia Peters and in . As first responders it seems there is always a shining star that emerges from the devastation and debris. From hurricane Florence we got Patricia, the proprietor of The Dames Inn, a historical and magnificent Grand House that sits on the corner of Princess Street and 15th in the mansion district of downtown Wilmington. She opened her doors and provided us with not only a warm place to come home to at the end of a muddy, exhausting day but she and her friends made sure there was a hot, gourmet meal waiting for us every evening. We witnessed Patricia work tirelessly to provide shelter to others in her restored 100 year old rental property that sits across the street, donating a sofa from her parlor to an 90 plus year old woman who lost everything, mattresses from her daybed located in one of The Dames Inn sunrooms. This lady was a marvel to watch and an inspiration at best.
I encourage my friends and family, if you are ever in Wilmington, stop by, say hello and ask for a tour of the Dames Inn. It is a once in a lifetime experience.
If you are a foodie, I cant close this without mentioning Chef of who is the owner of an intimate, melt in your mouth restaurant but who also worked non stop to provide food to those in need during the aftermath of this storm.
Patricia, thank you for all you did and continue to do, you are amazing, made up of pure goodness and the friendship that evolved from Hurricane Florence will last a lifetime….
The Dames Inn, Wilmington, NC we will be back! We know whenever there is a knock on the door, Patricia will always answer it.

Bittersweet watching as the relief workers that stayed with me throughout the storm’s aftermath leave this morning. The most amazing women I have ever met; their heartbreaking hard work, tireless dedication in helping others, and their true selflessness and compassion was the bright light that shone after this storm. I will miss them.

Our last meal together was Catch Restaurant and to say the least it was outstanding... as always.

Thank you Sherry, Karen, Shae, Chef Keith Rhodes and his remarkable team for giving so much of yourselves to our devastated community when we needed you the most.

In 1923 Mr. Walter Bergen engaged James B Lynch, architect, to build a home for his wife and seven children. In his infinite wisdom, Mr. Lynch put storm shutters on every window knowing this coast was prone to storms. They were handcranked from inside and during the years that followed I’m sure they were used for weather events which threatened the interior of the home. The shutters and mechanics have grown weary and tired during the course of years...they still exist but are rusted and old. Before Florence hit my daughter evacuated me to Charlotte, given HER infinite wisdom, knowing what she went through the year before when she and her young family were impacted by hurricane Irma. There was very little I could do for my beloved home except say goodbye and hope for the best. When I returned a few days ago, blessed by the goodness of neighbors and friends, I had a home still standing and a roof over my head. But the Dame took care of business; shutters that had not worked for years were shut and every window was protected as best it could. I’m lucky I am blessed that the Dame is still standing. Thank you to everyone for your prayers and support it means everything...and thank you Dame Catharine Carpender for protecting our home and all those souls who reside here
