So great to welcome back former GSRC coach Emma Spencer as our speaker today!

Emma graduated from Wi******er High School in 2008, where she ran three season track and XC. She went to college at Columbia University, and works full time as a software engineer at a tech startup. Her top accomplishments in high school were setting the course record on her home XC course, placing 5th in the state in the 1000m, and setting a DIII state record in the DMR. Post-collegiately she began running competitively again and took her marathon time from 3:20 to 2:45 in under 3 years. She holds a PR of 2:36 in the marathon, and placed 56th in the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials and 18th in the 2021 Boston Marathon.

Emma currently runs for the Notch Run Club in Salem, MA. She previously ran for the Raleigh Distance Project, an elite women’s team out of North Carolina. Other notable accomplishments: Three top-20 finishes at US Half Marathon Championships; 16th overall and 2nd American at 2018 Berlin Marathon. Her PRs include 2:36 (marathon), 1:14 (half marathon), 33:44 (10k), 16:04 (5k).

We’re so grateful Emma could join us and share her story with the GSRC community!

Our next speaker we want to highlight upcoming this week is the inspiring Becca Pizzi.

Becca’s father inspired her to run when she was 6 years old and she’s never stopped – competing through college. Becca lives in Belmont, MA with her husband Joe and daughter Taylor. Having been the first American female to run the World Marathon challenge in 2016 – 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days – Becca recently went back to make history by running it again and breaking the World Record: 6 Days, 7 Hours and 58 minutes. Becca says it was “an honor to represent our country. I loved the test of endurance and strength and to show my daughter Taylor that she can do anything she
puts her mind to.” Her current goal is to complete a marathon in all 50 states and to run the Kona Ironman.  She manages an ice cream shop and owns a day care. “I love to run and I love both of my jobs, and I feel so fortunate to have the community behind me.”

Big thank you to the always entertaining Nate Jenkins for speaking today! From a D2 walk-on at UMass Lowell to a 2:14 marathoner and 7th place finisher at the 2008 Olympic Trials, and even chasing a deer on a 20-mile long run, Nate’s journey was as inspiring as it was unfiltered. We loved hearing about his path from high school state champ to Team USA. Thanks for sharing your story!

Incredibly excited to kick off our star-studded lineup of 2025 guest speakers with a GSRC favorite: Coach H!

Coach Hatim Jean-Louis ("Coach H") brought a dormant Boston Public Schools Citywide XC team back to life in 2015 and has been the head coach since then. In 2018, Coach H led the squad to its first invitational win in 30 years by taking the Big Wave team title. In 2022, his boys team qualified for All States which was the first team from Boston to qualify in over 50 years. Then in 2023, both his boys and girls teams qualified for All States. He has coached numerous athletes who have gone on to run in college as well. In addition, he has coached track and field for the former West Roxbury Academy, leading his athletes to 18 City League individual titles and a Division 2 girls 400 meter title.

Hatim was an accomplished runner in high school and won a Class C 600 meter indoor championship, with a time of 1:21, in 1996. In that same year he placed 5th in the New England Championships. He went on to compete for the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in the 1996-1997 season.

He is very active in Massachusetts track and field as a correspondent for Bay State Running, where he previews state meets and provides commentary and interviews with the state's best high school runners.

He is an at-large member of the board of the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association and coaches at both the Champions are Made in the Summer strength camp and the Foss Running Camp. He is also an announcer at the New Balance Indoor and Outdoor National Championship Meets.
