"Freemasonry is a beautiful system of morality, veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols." Freemasonry is the world's oldest and largest fraternity. Through the study and practice of virtue, its members endeavor to advance their spiritual interest. The system of morality, to which we have just referred, is that which every Mason is bound to profess and practice. It doubtless includes princip

les with which he was familiar before he became a Mason. These principles are presented in new ways and under forms different from those with which he was previously familiar. If he does not find in Masonic teachings anything surprisingly new, he should remember that in many respects at least there is "nothing new under the sun"; and that the essence of morality is to be found in the utter simplicity (though not the ease) of its requirements. Freemasonry is neither a religion, a political organization, nor a social club. It has for its foundation the basic principles of the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man. It teaches a belief in a Supreme Being, in the immortality of the soul, and that the Holy Book is the inestimable gift of God to man as the rule and guide for his faith and practice. It is a Fraternity or brotherhood pledged to the building of character -- thoughts, words, motives, and deeds being the materials used. It strives to teach man the duty he owes to God, his country, his neighbor, and himself. It inculcates the practice of virtue and morality in daily conduct, and it conveys its teachings through ceremonies and symbols.

150 years ago today, Oxford Orphan Asylum opened its doors to provide a home for children in need. It was North Carolina's first home for children. Thousands of children have called this place home since then. Today, the Masonic Home for Children is committed to continuing the mission and goals set 150 years ago and also to expanding the services and programs to help even more children and families. Happy Birthday to MHCO!

Most Worshipful Brother Tom Gregory is my masonic hero.

On the anniversary of his death, I cannot help but remember the first time I visited historic Concord Lodge in Tarboro, NC. In 1998, when presiding as Grand Master, he held a District Meeting there. My father was Senior Warden of Mt. Lebanon Lodge (Wilson, NC) and I attended with him at his insistance. He had informed me that the remarks were likely to be historic and I needed to go and hear what he had to say.

Most Worshipful Brother Gregory was advocating for the recognition of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of NC. In an inspiring oration, in what can only be described as a tension filled venue, MWB Gregory conducted himself with dignity and aplomb, personifying the character of our masonic ideal. While his message was and is to this day an important one, it was MW Gregory's poise and courage, that have been firmly imprinted upon my mind these many years.

There have since been several times in my professional career when I have needed to deliver unwelcome news to a less than welcoming audience. Each time, I have reflected and drawn upon the example of our Most Worshipful Brother's courage, integrity, and, fortitude for inspiration.

His life was well lived and his death is regreted.

Found my old masonic ring. Haven't worn in it in a couple of years. I think I'll start wearing it again. In years past it sparked many warm and memorable conversations with Brothers I had not previously met. Now, the question of "points in" or "points out" comes to mind. For years I have heard and understand the case made for each. I am ambivalent as to which is one and only "proper" way to wear my ring. The deciding factor for me is that I understand that in some jurisdictions, "points in" means that wearer is unavailable to talk about our fraternity. Because I do not wish any brother to feel put off or that I am unavailable, I shall wear my ring "points out."
