During the 1920’s,
The Peterson family of Austin vacationed in the nearby town of Wimberley. At the time it was a day’s journey, and immediately became a family favorite. As soon as ‘Camp Wimberley’ became available for purchase in 1932, the Peterson’s were finally able to own a little piece of heaven.The resort continued to remain in the family after Mabel Peterson sold to her daughter, Jane Peterson Franklin and her husband Chester ‘Mugs’ Franklin in 1963. After the Boy Scouts named their property ‘Camp Wimberley’, the name needed to be changed to avoid confusion.The family decided on the name Rio Bonito, meaning beautiful river in Spanish. Upon their death, the property was then again bought by family. This time their daughter, Cindy Franklin Meeks, and her husband Steve Meeks took over in 1999. As fate would have it, history repeated itself as their eldest son, Matthew Franklin Meeks and wife Natalie Meeks, bought the majority of the resort and property in December of 2015 after the devastating Memorial Day Flood. Since Steve and Cindy Meeks still own a 3 cabins, they have maintained their operating name of Rio Bonito Resort. The newly purchased portion with 9 cabins and an events venue has been re-named The Waters Point. This is an ode to both the “point” in the water on the property created by the confluence of the Blanco River and Cypress Creek, as well as to all of the arrowhead points that are scattered across the land from those that considered this place home centuries ago. Both The Waters Point and Rio Bonito Resort plan to operate the property in unison, merging their resources to better serve their guests. Matt and Natalie, along with their young sons, Carter and Creek, hope to maintain the same serenity and beauty their family has enjoyed for generations and hopefully for generations yet to come.
