I have a little girl that just turned 6 who has been coming to my house whenever she can for the last year. She comes and sits with me in the studio. She paints or draws. Her focus is so intense..She is so serious and exact about what she wants to create when we are together. I didnt have time to get into acrylics and canvas but I decided we should do watercolors together. Real professional watercolor paint. Brushes, and rag paper. I had some plants I pulled from the desert roadside...she loved the yellow ones. I showed her one time how to draw the flowers, how to look at them closely, how many petals, how many colors of yellow are in it. Then we discussed greens, bright green, sage green...then blues. I showed how to add single colors together to create different colors. How to use multiple colors on the rocks and how the ground color wasnt the same green as the plant. How to use a lot of water and little water to make watercolor lighter or darker. She has intense focus...and she loves spending time with me as I do her. We talk about everything...she's very open and says it as it is. And we mostly discuss art...Little miss independent. This her finished painting. I always frame her work or make it so she can hang it. We wrap it up in paper and she excitedly takes it home for Mom and Dad. She is why I love to teach.
