The house is gone and only the barns can tell us the history. In the past the livestock called early morning, the hay filled the lofts with rich green smells, the tractor echoed through the rafters setting the agenda for the day. Children and Grandchildren played in the hay. The dark clouds representing the past hover over the barn as it whispers please dont forget me for once I was the root of our nation. I have a little girl that just turned 6 who has been coming to my house whenever she can for the last year. She comes and sits with me in the studio. She paints or draws. Her focus is so intense..She is so serious and exact about what she wants to create when we are together. I didnt have time to get into acrylics and canvas but I decided we should do watercolors together. Real professional watercolor paint. Brushes, and rag paper. I had some plants I pulled from the desert roadside...she loved the yellow ones. I showed her one time how to draw the flowers, how to look at them closely, how many petals, how many colors of yellow are in it. Then we discussed greens, bright green, sage green...then blues. I showed how to add single colors together to create different colors. How to use multiple colors on the rocks and how the ground color wasnt the same green as the plant. How to use a lot of water and little water to make watercolor lighter or darker. She has intense focus...and she loves spending time with me as I do her. We talk about everything...she's very open and says it as it is. And we mostly discuss art...Little miss independent. This her finished painting. I always frame her work or make it so she can hang it. We wrap it up in paper and she excitedly takes it home for Mom and Dad. She is why I love to teach.

I finished this watercolor for an entry of a show. The entry deadline was last Friday. Im not sure if it will make the cut but it is entered. I didn't want to create a political piece but I wanted to pay tribute to two Anthems we used to sing growing up. America the Beautiful and God Bless America. If you know the original history of these songs you will understand why I painted this piece. God Bless America was writtem by a Russian Immigrant Irving Berlin in 1918. The anthem America the beautiful was written by a woman Katharine Lee Bates in 1895 on top of Pikes Peak. After a long train ride from east coast to Colorado Springs and climbing to the top of Pikes Peak she was enspired by the vastness of our country and the opportunities it offered everyone. "AMERICA the beautiful", watercolor on board, 18"×18" 2026. goldengatebridge Arizona midwest
