🏠 A wedding gift of two acres of land and $7,500 became the only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house in Alabama!
And it's right here in Florence!
In 1939, Louis and Anna Rosenbaum gave their son Stanley and his wife, Mildred “Mimi” Rosenbaum, a two-acre lot overlooking the Tennessee River, along with $7,500 to help build their new home.
But the young couple didn't want a traditional Colonial-style house.
They had been reading about a famous architect named Frank Lloyd Wright, and they decided to approach him about designing something different.
Wright created a Usonian home, part of his vision for beautiful, practical housing for middle-income American families.
Built in 1939–1940, the house featured cypress wood, brick, expansive glass walls, flat roofs, deep overhangs, and an innovative open floor plan.
As the Rosenbaum family grew to include four sons, Wright designed an expansion in the late 1940s.
Mildred continued living in the house until 1999, when she sold it to the City of Florence.
The city undertook a major restoration, preserving one of Alabama's most remarkable architectural treasures.
Today, the Rosenbaum House is open as a historic house museum, giving visitors a chance to experience Frank Lloyd Wright's design firsthand.
In 2004, Florence received the Wright Spirit Award for its preservation efforts.
