We are saddened to learn that our dear friend and longtime camper, Dick Ham, recently passed away at his home in Massachusetts. For over fifty years, Dick, and his late wife, Joleen, made Chewonki Campground their summer residence on site #23.

Kind, inquisitive, and supportive, Dick loved his three children, Debbie, David, and Betsey, and he found much happiness spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A graduate of Bowdoin College, educator, and friend to many, Dick relished a good laugh, read continuously, and engaged in thoughtful conversation.

For us, Dick was more than a loyal camper. He helped shape the warm spirit that our Chewonki community exhibits today. With positivity, patience, and words of encouragement, Dick guided many to embrace joy while here at the Campground.

We take comfort in knowing he is reunited with Joleen and we know they will be shining down on Chewonki for years to come. We offer our heartfelt sympathy to his family. Dick will always be a beloved part of our Chewonki story.

Frequently during the summer months at Chewonki Campground in Wiscasset, I would seek out site 2D between the white Pines where Mark and Karin Freeman stayed as seasonal campers. Almost always, I would find them both sitting outside talking softly, enjoying the calm. Welcomed with a hug from each, we’d visit and share news of our families.

The pride Karin expressed when talking about Anna & Lucy and Evie & Ellie enlighten the true meaning of family. Always compassionate, Karin found joy in simplicity. It could be a short drive up the coast an overnight in Portland or a stop at Reid State Park to walk the beach. Every venture she took to heart and return to her campsite renewed and appreciative.

I sought her out under those pines numerous times to gather the peace and wisdom she offered unconditionally. Lots of laughter, insights, titles of great books, finding the positive in the negative are memorable values that Karin Freeman shared willingly and graciously.

Ann, Johannah, Phaelon and I will miss that wonderful, brave woman, Karin Freeman.

Happy 95th Birthday to Dick Ham! 🎉
For over 60 years, Dick has been a beloved seasonal camper at Chewonki Campground, spending his summers surrounded by the beauty of Maine. His enduring positivity, charisma, and love for the outdoors have inspired generations—his children and grandchildren continue the tradition he began.
Dick and his late wife Joleen brought joy, laughter, and heartfelt connection to our community, and we are so grateful for the lasting impact they've had. More than a loyal camper, Dick is a treasured member of the Chewonki family.
Wishing you a joyful day, Dick—you make 95 look young! 🌲🎂

Every summer since the late 1960’s, we have been graced by the presence of Ida Freeman and her family at Chewonki Campground in Wiscasset, Maine. She parked her camper on the “Knoll” for a week every August, and from there, Ida relaxed, extending compassion and goodwill to those around her. At times there would easily be twenty – thirty children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren gathered on her site to visit, share, and rejoice.
​When Ida came, we always talked about the books we had read throughout the year. Her passion matched ours for the written word. We eagerly shared titles, authors, and recommendations.
​The last time we saw Ida was right after the Freeman Lobster Feed in August of ’24. The large tent was down and folded, the pots washed, the picnic tables returned to their sites, and day guests were on their way home. Ida, Karen, and a group of grandchildren and spouses walked slowly down the camp road, Ida in the lead, managing her walker with finesse. The Ice Cream Social was in full swing, and each person came away with a double scoop! We watched as they ambled back down the camp road to their sites. We stood honored to be in the presence of such a strong family, unified by Ida’s example, fortified by Ida’s love.
​We will hold close to our memories of Ida- a woman whose presence brought comfort and whose words carried the weight of experience and understanding. She lived with dignity, led with courage, and left a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
​When the Freeman Family continue their annual camping tradition this August, Ida’s absence will be felt. But let’s rest in the knowing that she is reunited with her beloved Anton, and let’s trust that their presence lingers in moments of laughter around the campfire and in the immeasurable bond felt among each member of the Freeman Clan.
