Update: As of 4:30pm, primary ignitions on the Cowles Dune Prescribed Fire are complete. Smoke will be visible through the evening in the area. Rain coming tomorrow will extinguish any remaining smoking materials in the coming days.

On Monday, March 30, Fire crews plan to complete the Cowles Dune Prescribed Fire. Approximately half of the burn unit was completed today, March 29. Ignitions are expected to start between 10 and 11 am on Monday.

The Cowles Dune trail system is inaccessible during the prescribed fire event.

Additionally, less than 1/2 acre of research plots will be burned at Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk on Monday, March 30. There should be no effect on visitor access there.
