We are sad to report that Claudia Trumbull, longtime host in the various camps in the Bighorn National Forest for Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds, passed away January 16, 2026. Many of you will remember her excellent service to campers over the year. A memorial service will be held on June 27 or 28, 2026 at Ranger Creek Recreation Area. Cards can be sent to Sidney Trumbull at South Fifth Street, Greybull, WY 82426.

Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds is making changes to our Recreation.gov reservation information. Until the changes are completed we have disabled early reservations for 45 days or until the work is done. This will delay reservations that could normally be made 6 months in advance to start less than 6 months in advance. Keep checking back to this site and at Recreation.gov for the lifting of the closure. We will post the date sites are open for early reservations once we are ready. Please note, that early reservation for sites over the 4th of July are impacted in all Forest Service campgrounds we manage in the Bighorn National Forest. This includes Sibley Lake, Tie Flume, Dead Swede, North Tongue, Sitting Bull, Lakeview, Tie Hack, South Fork and Middle Fork among others. Please call 406-587-9054 if you have questions.

Fire danger will be high for the next two days with hot weather and wind. Be careful out there. The Bighorn National Forest is still maintaining Stage 1 fire restrictions where campfires are allowed only in the fire rings in the campgrounds. Propane and gas stoves are also okay.

06/24/2021

Good news and bad news..... on Saturday, June 26 Parkside, Greenough Lake and Limberpine will reopen for camping. We will be in Stage I fire restrictions which means no fires allowed outside of the campground. The campgrounds will allow fires in the fire rings. The bad news is Rattin and Sheridan campgrounds will remain under fire closure until July 2. If you have a reservation in one of these camps, please do not cancel it on your own. If the closure is lifted early all reservations will be reinstated. If it is still closed by your arrival date, you will be given a full refund on that date automatically. Thanks for your patience and pray for rain.

The five campgrounds on the Main Fork of Rock Creek south of Red Lodge remain closed as the Robertson's Draw fire is still not fully contained. Conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday will be hot and windy which will test the fire lines. Reservations to June 25 will cancel and the fees will be fully refunded as each day remains closed. The refunds will occur automatically and affected parties do not have to call to make their refund request. The affected campgrounds are Greenough Lake, Limberpine, Parkside, Rattin and Sheridan. Sites 11 and 12 in Basin have also been closed with refunds being issued through June 24 to accommodate displaced staff that are still needed in the area.

06/18/2021

The camping season has gotten off to a wild start with great weather and a crush of people for Memorial Day. But wild winds flattened 46 green trees in Sheridan Campground including one truck. Now we are under evacuation orders for Rattin, Sheridan, Greenough Lake, Limberpine and Parkside due to the Robertson Draw Fire. This order will continue through the weekend. If you had a reservation in any of these camps, under the fire closure, your reservation will be cancelled and your money refunded automatically once your arrival day rolls around. Your reservation is not cancelled or refunded until your arrival day; this means as soon as the camps are cleared to reopen all reservations from that day on are honored. Please pray for safety for our fire fighters and for rain.

The Beartooth Ranger District campgrounds managed by Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds will have a two-day cut-off window for all reservations. This means that the campsites that do not have any incoming reservations for the next two days will be open for first come, first serve camping for at least those two days. You can check recreation.gov for sites that did not get reserved if you are planning a last minute trip and want to know if any sites may be open for first come, first serve camping.

Greenough Lake will open this weekend for reservations and first come, first serve camping. You can reserve for Friday if you do it by Wednesday. For Saturday by Thursday, etc. We have a two-day cutoff window for the Beartooth Ranger District campgrounds this year. Greenough Lake construction contract will be at least 45 days away from being awarded. This means we can reserve and camp in the campground for at least the next 45 days. When the contract is awarded (after 45 days) we will have a contractor who will set the start time for the project. In all reality, it will probably not be until the fall. So watch here for updates and more days opening for reservations in Greenough Lake Campground.

Greenough Lake Campground is slated for refurbishing and construction of a new loop for the summer of 2021. Details are still pending on completion schedules that will impact whether the original sites can be used. Currently, all reservations are suspended and no new reservations are allowed. Depending on contractor scheduling, weekends may still be available for first come, first serve. The start date for construction is also still unknown. When these details become available, we will post more information here and on the website. Full cancellations are available for any that already have reservations in Greenough Lake. Full refunds will be allowed for reservations that are not cancelled by the customer immediately if you prefer to wait to see when the shut-down will actually start.

01/22/2021

Basin Campground will have its camp road chip sealed between July 19 and August 20. This work will take three days the exact date of which is yet to be determined. When the contractor firms up a date, we will release the other dates within this timeframe. Until then, no reservations are being taken in Basin for July 19 to August 20. Check back often to find updates.
