It is turtle hatching season! Enjoy the marvel and spectacle of a "Boiling nest" once the eggs begin to hatch. Remember not to disturb any nests while they are incubating.

The Hatching and Emergence Process

Incubation: Mother sea turtles lay 80 to 120 eggs in a sandy nest above the high tide line. Sand temperature determines the hatchlings' s*x: cooler temperatures produce males, while warmer temperatures produce females.

Breaking Out: Hatchlings use a temporary snout bump called a caruncle to pip and tear open their soft, leathery eggshells T he Climb: After hatching, the baby turtles spend 3 to 7 days working together to dig upward through the sand, acting as a team to loosen and shift the grains until they reach just below the surface.

Journey to the Sea Timing: They wait for the sand to cool—usually signaling nighttime—to emerge en masse, which helps protect them from daytime heat and visual predators like birds. Navigation: Hatchlings find the ocean by moving toward the lowest, brightest horizon, typically reflecting off the water or wave crests.

The Swimming Frenzy: Once they hit the surf, they enter a multi-day swimming frenzy fueled by their remaining yolk sac, driving them straight out to deep, protective oceanic habitats.

Will be great viewing from the northern most tip of Shell Island, where the sky is dark and the ambient/extraneous light is minimal.

Tonight, the waxing crescent Moon forms a beautiful celestial triangle with brilliant Venus and the bright star Regulus in the western sky just after sunset. This dazzling cosmic duet is easily visible to the naked eye; simply look toward the western horizon as the sky fades to twilight .You can track the exact positioning and timing of the Moon and Venus from Wrightsville Beach by checking the Time and Date Astronomy Guide or the EarthSky Tonight for a broader guide to the July night sky.
