Make a morning of it at the Yachats State Recreation Area, an official state Whale Watch site right in town. Spread out a picnic at the river mouth, keep an eye on the water and let lunch stretch as long as the whales keep surfacing. Flat, easy and steps from the parking area, it's the low-key way to watch.

When the weather turns, whale watching can still be warm and dry. Thirty minutes north, Depoe Bay is the state's whale watching capital, and its state-run center sits right on the seawall with wide windows, loaner binoculars and rangers on hand. It's a good stop with kids and an easy backup when the wind picks up.

The best whale watching sometimes happens before you've left the room. Every room at Overleaf looks straight out at the migration route, so a spout can interrupt your morning coffee on the balcony. The Whale Watcher room leans all the way in, with a picture window framing the water. An ocean-view room is the difference between hoping for a sighting and catching one from bed.
