2024 Fundraiser
Basketball Court/Pickleball
In 1954 C.H. George donated 160 acres of forest land to be used as a camp for families and children of members of the local Churches of Christ. Over the years, through the foresight and leadership of Camp Yamhill board members, an adjoining 80 acres was added, bringing Camp Yamhill to its present total of 240 acres.
Over the 70 years since Camp Yamhill was founded many people have spent time and effort clearing land, constructing buildings and creating a thriving Camp. Most of the early buildings have been replaced over the years. Along with the addition of new buildings and other facilities, the early mission of the Camp has been expanded to include a Christian Outdoor School program, a challenge course and opening Camp for rentals to outside groups. Even though there have been tremendous changes to Camp, we have remained true to our core values of serving Church of Christ families and especially the children of these families.
All the work done over the years was accomplished because of the hard work and sacrifice of local Christians who saw and continue to see the value of Camp Yamhill to the church and families in the Northwest.
Camp is now able to operate debt free because of the faithfulness of our supporters. Camp has been able to put new roofs on buildings, install new flooring in cabins and complete a number of other projects because of the willingness of local Christians to sacrifice on behalf of Camp. Last year your generosity enabled Camp to re-roof the University building which will allow that building to remain a valuable asset for years to come.
When one visits Camp, they will see people involved in a variety of activities in a healthy, Spirit filled environment. One of the busiest places outdoors is our basketball court. The court is a hive of activity with people, both young and old, enjoying playing and fellowshipping together.
The basketball court has been in use for many years. It was constructed using a rubberized surface over an asphalt base. Over the years the surface has deteriorated with the rubber surface slowly peeling away leaving bare asphalt in many spots. Not only is this unsightly, but basketballs also tend to bounce in unpredictable ways on the uneven surface. Most importantly the peeling, uneven surface poses a tripping hazard with the possibility of injury to those using the court.
The goal of our 2024 year-end fund raiser is to raise $25,000 to install a new surface on the court. The new surface will be made of high impact, polypropylene based, perforated interlocking tiles. This type of surface has become very popular for outdoor sports facilities.
They are very durable with excellent drainage and provide very good traction as well as being customizable to any size court. The new court would provide our campers with a safe and attractive place to enjoy outdoor sports. Pickleball is a fun, fast paced game that has become the favorite of many people. The new court will be set up and lined for both basketball and pickleball.
The resurfaced basketball/pickleball court will be one more in a long line of improvements to Camp Yamhill designed to provide fun, safe and healthy activities to our families in a Christian environment. Camp Yamhill can only provide those services because we have always had generous supporters who share our goals and values. Camp Yamhill thanks all our supporters as you have shared in this ministry.
