Captain David Pugh, the visionary owner of Riverdale Farms, had a profound affection for chess that transcends time. His cherished chessboard, adorned with the initials 'D.Pugh', auctioned off before our time here, but its memory endures. Today, we remain intrigued by the chessboard's unknown whereabouts. Inspired by Captain Pugh's passion, we've brought the classic game outdoors with a custom-built chessboard, inviting guests to experience a piece of history that has captivated minds on this very farm since the 1800s.

It’s Virginia Bluebell season along the bank of Riverdale Farms. Mertensia virginica, also known as "Virginia Bluebells” or "Virginia Cowslip", is a beloved eastern US native wildflower. Its pink buds open to nodding clusters of fragrant, 1-inch pastel blue blooms.

A true ephemeral, Mertensia virginica blooms in early spring, while much of the nature’s garden has yet to wake up.

Virginia Bluebells fill a very important role as an early food source for native pollinators. Female bumblebees are especially attracted to it as they emerge in early spring.

Mount Vernon published the article below titled “Survey Along the Cacapon River”

The article summary:
As a young man, George Washington worked as a surveyor. In 1752, he surveyed "a certain tract of waste land" along the Cacapon River, approximately 20 miles west of present-day Wi******er, Virginia.

The article would be of interest as it mentioned a “tract” along the Cacapon River. My research revealed the tract would be that of John Pugh.

This tract of land surveyed by Young Washington would later become the land of David Pugh and now known as Riverdale Farms.

Shout out to George Washington's Mount Vernon for inadvertently advertising Riverdale Farms on President’s Day!
