Starry Starry Night at the Nubble.

It is that time of year again when my insomnia becomes somewhat of a helpful problem, if such a thing even exists.
The core of our galaxy is once again visible in southeastern night sky. Or more accurately early morning sky. Currently it is visible from about 4am till 5am and that will get longer and earlier in the morning as the days pass. It is always best to try to view The Milky Way during a new moon or at least before or after the moon has set and you will want to be in an area with as little light pollution as possible..
Quick crash course on the simple method to capturing The Milky Way at Nubble Lighthouse.
First thing you will want is good karma so when you arrive understand there is a reasonable chance that there is already 1 to a dozen other photographers already there attempting the same thing. Turn your headlights off ASAP. I turn mine off as I pass the gift shop driving in. Then you will want to park in the inside row facing away from the lighthouse. This will minimize your headlights ruining everyone else's outing. Also many photographers do not want to venture out onto the rocks and the front row of parking is where they will be set up to shoot. Use a headlamp with a red light as that makes your impact minimal on others and also allows your eyes to adjust better. If you go onto the rocks IT WILL be slippery and the snow drifts will be deceiving. Be sure you know what direction the tide is going in and if it is incoming be vigilant about paying attention to it because both you and your camera will not operate at peak performance while submerged in freezing cold salt water.
When it comes to camera settings, there are many ways to tackle this but the simplest method is to shoot it wide like 14-24mm. I will use the LCD screen zoomed into 100% on the back of the camera and point it at the brightest star in the sky and use manual focus to get it perfectly in focus. Then put the camera on a tripod and get my composition. The hurdle at The Nubble is the flood light that lights up the house and of course the bright red beacon tend to blow out your shot with any settings that are useful for capturing stars. The "right" way would be to do a composite with multiple frames but the simple way is make sure you go early in the season while the flood light is off and then I use the following settings ...
Shutter: 3 seconds
Aperture: F/1.8
ISO: 3200-4000

The key is the 3 second shutter speed and I use a 2 second shutter delay. When the red light on the tower comes on, I count for 1 second then hit the shutter. The 2 second delay then fires the shutter off right as the beacon is turning off and then your exposure ends just as it comes back on again mitigating its affect on your image and making it so you can capture it with one simple frame using traditional photography methods. These settings will work well if you goal is to keep it simple and have an end result that closely mimics what your eyes see once adjusted to the dark. You could use more elaborate techniques to create a more dramatic and technically clean image but that takes a little more work and I can explain that in another post if anyone cares to hear it.

Well here we are. Today we put the wrap on what was an absolutely unbelievable first season as a full time photographer.

I had no idea how this was going to go and I thought I prepared for every possible outcome. The only outcome I did not really consider was it actually going as well as it did. To say I have mixed emotions would be an understatement. One the one hand it felt amazing to finally be putting all my energy into my own thing. I have had the entrepreneurial spirit for a long time and to get to this point has been a dream of mine for the last 8 years.
On the other hand I never considered the stress I would feel to keep it going because I never had a taste of what this feels like. Now that I do the thought of going back to what came before this is nothing less than terrifying. I spent my entire life working jobs Id rather not be at with a lot less to show for it.
Then there is the fact that one of my biggest motivations to get to this point was to show to my parents that I could make this work and of course by the time I did make it work they are no longer here to see it and not a morning goes by that I don't wake up to that being the first thought in my mind. While I know they were never ever super excited about me taking that leap because they were definitely the "play it safe" type, they did fully support me and loved watching me grow the business and I know if they saw what we did this summer they would be so very excited for me.
So today is it ! We are at 119 Perkins Cove in Ogunquit Maine and we are open from 10 till whenever it turns into a ghost town. I plan to stay till 4 cause I don't really think I am going to want to walk out of there because this whole idea of not having to be at a specific place at a specific time for the next 3 months is going to be so unbelievably foreign to me, I am getting anxious just writing about it.
I guess the good news is I will have time to find a lot more wildlife which for the first time ever was a huge part of the business this year. I always joked about the time I put into wildlife because no one buys it but that all changed this year. Not sure why but Wildlife was probably half of my revenue at the gallery this year so I have a lot of work to do this off season to keep it fresh for you next year.
