Merida is nestled between the Andes mountains and represents the official start of the mountain chain that extends all the way south to Patagonia.

But do not be fooled, Merida is not a destination but a journey that starts once you start climbing the Páramo as we call the different mountain roads going up to 4200 meters in every direction from Merida city.

The beauty of the Paramo is not only marked by the nature which is breathtaking in it self with lagoons, hot water springs and the endemic species Frailejones that makes it so unique, but also it's picture-perfect little villages, with strawberries and cream on every corner and smiling red-cheeked children always willing to pose for a picture.

This is what you come to Merida for... the journey, the beauty and the kindest people in our country... so take your time and do not hurry... and you will build memories that will last a life time.

A nice itinerary to Visit Venezuela without Salto Angel, Roraima, Los Roques or the Delta
A more budget friendly route that you can do on your own is the following :
We start in Caracas, you can do two or three days Caracas, one day the centre, one day Petare and one day the Avilla (mountain behind Caracas), the cable car is only open from Thursday till Sunday) but there are also many nice waterfalls where you can walk to.
After CSS you can go to Colonia Tovar, a nice german town at 2000 m height ,here you can eat strawberry with cream and sausage off course, half a day is enough to see the place.
Next day you take the bus to la Victoria and continue to Choroni via Maracay, Choroni is a nice colonial fishing village with nice beaches and walks nearby, you can go to Chuao to see Cacao plantations and the big waterfall el chorreron, also boot trips to nearby bays like Cepe and Tuja are possible or just relax at the malecon and see the fishermen come in with their fish.
In Choroni you can easily spend 3 or more days, then you go to Valencia, where you can go to the hot springs in Trincheras, 42 degrees is the hottest bath, visit the centre of Valencia and there are also some nice waterfalls near Valencia where in the weekend local tour operator do canyoning trips, Valencia is surrounded by hills, so many walking and cycling opportunities.

From Valencia you can go to Isla Larga and Patanemo near Puerto Cabello which is also a nice town, but most people continue to Nat park Morrocoy, where from Tucacas or Chichiriviche you can visit the Caribbean islands, the most famous one is cayo Sombrero and for party you go to Los Juanes in the weekend.

Then most people come back to Valencia to take the bus to Merida (12 hours or more), where you can take the highest and longest cable car in the world, do nice walks, go to the hotspring of la Musuy, from Merida you can do tours to los llanos (wetlands) and the relampago de Catatumbo (lighting without thunder) and then fly back to Caracas or continue to colombia.

You could also go from Morrocoy to Coro a nice colonial village with big sand dunes behind and also some nice waterfalls nearby and from there continue to Merida

Is Valencia in Venezuela worth visiting? If you got the time then I think yes.

Firstly, the historical cities center is very nice but small, the plaza bolivar is newly renovated, further you got the beautiful Theatro Municipal, where in the weekends many times you got free events outside and paying events inside. Walk from the plaza Bolivar to the plaza Bicentenario, go back, buy an ice cream o a malteada at Heladeria Crema Polar and eat it at the plaza Bolivar, if you want to visit the musea casa Paez, centro cultural Nelson Mandela or casa de la Estella then you should do that in the morning, They close early.

When you visit Valencia you will notice that our Governor loves Dracula, you will see graffiti paintings of baths everywhere, The government workers with a bath on their shirt and number 10 because he also loves Maradona, we got Dracu police, Dracu agua, Dracu Gaz, Dracu kids parks,Dracu Plaza, Dracu beer and Draculandia you will think you are in Transylvania.

We also got a nice city park which is called Negra Hipolita or Parque Fernando Penalver, you will see small capybara, iguana’s, squirrels and nice birds close to the river.

Valencia is almost completely surround by hills, where there are many trails for walking, Casupo is very famous by locals, between 30 and 45 min rocky climb and the highest peak is Cerro el Cafe, a 6 km climb done by walkers and mountain bikers,Tazajal on the other side is also very popular by walkers and Mountain bikers there are many Trails.

Local tour operators often organize canyoning trips to 40 m high waterfalls close to Valencia.

Trincheras is known for his thermal waters up to 42 degrees, best to visit after 4 pm, 17 km from our posada. Also a nice place for longer walks.

On the other side of Valencia you got Campo Carabobo, the battlefield where Simon Bolviar defeated the Spanish more the 200 years ago. There is a nice monument and the change of guards every two hours.

Further we got a lot of good restaurants, a big amusement/water park called Dunas and also Puerto Cabello and his nice beaches (isla Larga for snorkling and diving and patanemo for surfing) can be done on a daytrip, even Morrocoy.

How is it to live in Venezuela part 2 /Gas and Water

Gas

When there is no electricity you can of course use gas for cooking, filling a gas bottle is also almost free, but not easy, either you stand in line for a long time or in some neighborhoods it is also brought to your home. It Costs almost nothing if it is provided by the government but they will come for refills every 3 or 4 months. In apartments, you can have gas coming through the pipes but at normal houses most of the time you will need bottles.
However, you can always find bottles or refill in the back market for 5-10$ for an 18L gas bottle.

Water

Water, is also cheap, very cheap, but not always available, we have water in the street three days a week, Wednesday, Saturday and Monday, from night until about noon, with that water we fill our underground tank of 9000 liters. In appartments, you often have no water if there is no electricity, because there is only an underground tank and a pump that constantly circulates the water, but if there is no electricity then in many buildings this pump does not work, sometimes the water is rationed if their underground tank is almost empty, then you have water for an hour 3 times a day, some people then have a tank in their apartment to store water. It also depends on where you live.So when you are looking for a place to stay, ask if there is water when there is no electricity, ask if they got a water well (pozo) many places do and that means that even if there is no water in the street there is always water just need to ask if the pump works when there is no electricity, also ask if they have a tank in the apartment to store water.

Of course, you cannot drink this water, we first let it run through two filters but still it's not drinkable or at least we never tried.

For drinking water, you fill 20 liter bottles, which costs 50 BSS, sometimes it is even better to boil that water first. There are sometimes places where you can get free water from a water well.

If the place where you stay has a water well, then you can get drinking water for free from the well if they have a drinking water clearance.
