We are all putting out good thoughts for a season without any major hurricanes hitting. But it is still smart to be prepared. What are good skills to have after a major hurricane hits? Wild edible plants, fire structure and cooking, simple tarp shelter, water purification, sanitation, food preservation and storage....by being prepared we can all support each other.

Warp and Weft Basketry Workshop

In this workshop, we use vines to weave a style of basketry that is very basic and is found all over the world. These baskets are begun at the base and are worked upwards to finish at the rim. There are many ways to vary this type of basket, such as flat bottom or rounded bottom, different styles of rims, and different styles of handles.

Still, spaces left for the Stone Tools and Atlatl Workshop this Saturday, 8am-12pm. Learn how to make an arrowhead the way it would have been done in the time of the stone age. You can also make your own atlatl (spear thrower, which is considered the precursor to the bow and arrow). Participants under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Just had a great Tropical Skills Class last month. Coconut palm weaving, calabash and bamboo craft, bark-tanned snake skins, fish spears, various fire-by-friction techniques, wild edibles, traps, pottery, royal palm plaited baskets....such a fun week! And really cool people too! We plan to run the class again next winter.
