Hi Sea Viewers!
Lately we've read and heard about the 51st BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival in the local news and social media. But do you know what a Regatta is and how it started?
To those who don't know, a Regatta is a competitive event which includes a series of boat races and a celebration of maritime culture. The term "Regatta" has it's origins in the latin language and it means "contest."
The BVI Spring Regatta reportedly began in 1972 as just a two-day event with a few boats racing the Sir Francis Drake Channel and around the BVI archipelago. Mr. Peter Haycraft OBE, founder of Road Town Wholesale and RiteWay (RTW), together with founder member of the Royal BVI Yacht Club (RBVIYC) Mr. Albie Stewart, were founding organisers.
Now marking 2024 with its 51st edition, the Spring Regatta is the largest sailing event in the BVI, and one of the most prestigious regattas in the Caribbean.
The BVI has always been fortunate to have ideal sailing conditions: warm clear water, steady winds, and islands that are close to each other, all with swim friendly beaches. This makes the BVI a natural choice for sailing and a great location for both local and visiting sailors and boats.
As a BVI based hotel, we're always delighted to welcome guests who come to the BVI to join in the regatta. To our guests who took part - we hope that you had a wonderful regatta both ashore and on the water.
We wish you all the best for the sailing season, and we look forward to welcoming you back next year for another weekend of great BVI sailing😄
