What is St. John’s connection to the Underground Railroad?

Enslavement has always been a part of human history. No matter the circumstances, human nature dictates that individuals yearn for self-determination and community. Everywhere that slavery has ever existed the fight for freedom has revealed common themes.

The entire Caribbean was heavily afflicted by the European slave trade. While St John was still under Danish control, Britain abolished slavery on the nearby island of Tortola in 1834. Consequently, between 1834 and 1848, over one hundred freedom seekers from St. John made the treacherous 2-mile journey in shark infested waters. Stories like these made it possible for Virgin Islands National Park’s Leinster Bay Trail to be named as a unit of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

We would like to invite our digital visitors to engage with us over the next few days as we explore some of the unique Caribbean experiences of freedom seekers in remembrance of Juneteenth Emancipation Day.
