Local markets bustle with activity as people prepare sticky rice, traditional cakes, and rich roasted ducks. Following the ancient proverb "Eat chicken in January, eat duck in July", every household prepares ducks for the sacred family feast.

Though known as the Mid-July Festival, "Pây Tái" reaches its peak on the 14th day of the 7th Lunar Month. In the Tày & Nùng languages, "Pây Tái" means "returning to the maternal home"—a precious tradition where married daughters and their families return to visit her parents, cook heartfelt meals, pay respects to the village guardian spirits, and honor their ancestors.

Have You Ever Heard of the "So lộc" Tet of the Tày & Nùng People? 🌿

Today, on the 6th day of the 6th lunar month, villages across Cao Bằng are vibrantly celebrating "So lộc" Tet. In the Tày language, "So lộc" means "praying for blessings". As the transplanting season concludes and fields turn green, locals prepare ritual offerings to thank heaven, earth, and ancestors for favorable weather. Remarkably, this is also a rare festival dedicated to the "soul of the water buffaloes"—a day for these hard-working animals to rest and receive special care.

The traditional offerings must include: Homemade fresh rice noodles, duck meat, and "Cóc mò" cake. Elders pass down a story that during this high-water season, chickens cannot cross the swelling rivers, so duck meat is offered instead so they can "swim" across to fetch family blessings. Meanwhile, the horn-shaped "Cóc mò" cakes, made from fragrant sticky rice, symbolize wishes for a strong, bountiful harvest.

Tết Đoan Ngọ - The Pest-Killing Day 🐛

Today is the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, the Đoan Ngọ Festival—a traditional occasion marking the sharpest seasonal transition of the year (mid-summer), a time when pests easily arise, which is why it is colloquially known as the "pest-killing day." According to folklore, Vietnamese people prepare a feast and burn incense to pray for the newly sown rice crop to grow lush and bountiful under favorable weather, while wishing that pests will not thrive so that trees and crops can bloom and yield fruit abundantly.

The offerings prepared by families on this day vary depending on the customs of each region. In Cao Bằng, the fruit platter must include plums, and it definitely cannot be complete without small, amber-colored ash cakes (Bánh tro hoặc bánh gio). Once unpeeled, these chewy cakes are dipped in sweet, refreshing molasses (some places might add fermented sticky rice). For the main meal, an authentic highland Đoan Ngọ lunch must feature fresh rice noodles served with duck—whether it is refreshing boiled duck or roasted duck infused with fragrant mac mat leaves.
