ANCESTOR DAY OFFERINGS: THE FLAVORS OF GRATITUDE

Today marks the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month – the most sacred time for the people of Cao Bang. Unlike typical festivals, Ancestor Day (Thanh Minh) is a quiet period for everyone to return to their roots and practice the tradition of "When drinking water, remember its source."

Since early morning, the hills of Trung Khanh have been vibrant with colorful paper flags and the scent of incense.

The highlights of the tray are the fresh fish harvested from the communal pond and a golden poached chicken. Accompanied by vibrant five-color sticky rice dyed with natural forest leaves—a symbol of luck and prosperity—these dishes create a meaningful tribute

At Green Door, we believe the beauty of a destination lies not just in its landscapes, but in how people cherish their past. Witnessing this spirit of filial piety, you will understand why our local culture remains so resilient.
Join us in Trung Khanh to touch the most authentic values of the borderlands.

THE STORY OF REVERENCE 💦

If you visit Green Door during the early days of the 3rd lunar month, you might notice our pond is empty. Far from a mistake, this is a special signal: our village is preparing for Ancestor Day (3/3 of the lunar month) – the most important traditional event in Cao Bang.

For the Tay and Nung people, this festival holds deep spiritual significance; it is a time for family members to pause their work and return to their roots to clean and honor their ancestors' graves. According to local tradition, on the 1st day of the 3rd lunar month, the entire neighborhood gathers to drain the pond for a communal fish harvest. The finest fish from this pond are chosen as the most respectful offerings for the ceremony.

This collective harvest is not just about preparation; it’s an opportunity to strengthen community bonds and share the fruits of a year’s hard work. The beauty of highland culture lies in these moments: spiritual preparations starting with simple, communal joy. Looking out from Green Door, watching everyone busy with the harvest, we feel a deep connection between people, nature, and our heritage.

Join us at Green Door this March to immerse yourself in the most meaningful and traditional season of the year.

🎋 "Co Sầu" Market – The heart of Trùng Khánh

It is said that to understand a land, one must visit its market. In Trung Khanh, that essence lies in Co Sau Market – the busiest trading hub of the region. Despite administrative changes, it remains the largest and most vibrant gathering place, offering a richness that surpasses any other.

The market follows a 5-day cycle (1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th of the lunar month). However, even on non-market days, Co Sau remains active with a full range of essential goods and local specialties. Here, you can easily find everything: from traditional indigo outfits and fresh wild vegetables to the tempting aroma of local steaming cakes.

A scenic 15-minute drive from Green Door brings you to the heart of Trung Khanh’s most bustling atmosphere. See you at Co Sau for a morning stroll to experience the warm and lively rhythm of local life.

🪴 QINGMING

According to the East Asian calendar, Qingming does not follow a fixed lunar date but is based on the solar calendar.
It is the 5th of the 24 solar terms, usually beginning around April 4th or 5th and lasting about 15 days. In 2026, it begins on April 5th.

“Qingming” means clarity and brightness — a time when the air softens, trees begin to bud and people turn their thoughts toward their roots.

In many places, it is a time for tomb-sweeping, honoring ancestors and remembering where we come from.

But for the Tay and Nung people in Cao Bang, Qingming carries a rhythm of its own.

It is a day to fully rest — when all farming work is set aside.
There is even an old belief: no hats or head coverings when going outside, as a wish for balanced weather and good harvests.

Instead of working, people gather at local markets — to meet, talk, and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
In the past, this was also where Then and Luon folk songs were exchanged, bringing people closer through simple melodies.

And of course, there are traditional cakes — soft banh bo, sweet fried cakes, herbal mugwort cakes—
simple foods that carry memories and ways of life through generations.

Qingming, in this sense, is more than a date — it is a quiet pause, to remember, to rest, and to feel a little closer to one another.

Green Door Home Village wishes you a peaceful Qingming season.

🎋 A TASTE OF "CO SẦU" FESTIVAL
The "Co Sầu" Festival takes place on the 15th day of the 2nd lunar month each year.
In 2026, it falls on April 2nd — a time when Trung Khanh becomes more vibrant than ever.

During this season, people don’t just look forward to the celebration, but also to the distinctive local dishes of Cao Bang.

The food feels simple, yet full of flavor.

Among the small festival stalls, you might notice a pot of broth gently steaming in the cool air, fresh rice rolls, a warm bowl of pho, or roasted duck and crispy pork with tender meat inside.

Alongside these are humble sweet treats like che lam, banh troi, banh bo, and grass jelly, together with the vibrant colors of black sticky rice, five-colored sticky rice, and traditional rice cakes— each carrying stories of the highlands and the care behind how they are made.

Festival food is not elaborate, but it stays with you— not only for its flavors, but for the simple, genuine feeling of sitting together in the lively rhythm of the festival.

Come and experience it,
and let Green Door Home Village be part of your journey through the festival season.

INDIGO DYEING 🧵

In Cao Bang, indigo is not just a color, but a meticulous journey preserved by the Nung An people.
To create a piece of indigo fabric, many steps are required. From planting dye-producing plants – indigo and “san” – to harvesting, the process takes around 10–11 months.
From the end of the 8th to the 10th lunar months, when the weather is dry and sunny, the dyeing season begins. After harvesting, the plants are soaked in stone vats in front of the house and fermented for 2–3 days. Lime is then added and stirred to help the dye settle at the bottom. After another 1–2 days, the sediment is collected to form indigo paste, which is further mixed with natural ingredients to achieve the right dyeing solution.
White fabric – woven from cotton or synthetic fibers (without nylon) – is boiled, dried, and then dyed. The process is repeated many times: dipping, washing, drying, and re-dyeing. It is done twice daily, in the morning and afternoon, while the dye rests at night. The fabric is also beaten and rolled with wood or stone to soften the fibers and help the color bind more firmly.
Indigo fabric is used to make traditional clothing, scarves, bags, and daily items of the Tay and Nung people – durable and rich in cultural identity.
Today, only a few places still preserve this traditional craft. In Quang Uyen, the Nung An community continues to maintain it as an essential part of their daily life.
At Green Door Home Village, we cherish these traditions – offering guests not only a place to stay, but also a chance to experience authentic local culture ✨

Basket Weaving

In Cao Bằng, basket weaving is a familiar part of daily life.
Bamboo is split into thin strips, dried, and woven into baskets, carriers, and trays — simple tools used in everyday life and farming.
It is done during quiet farming breaks, you may come across this in the villages: someone sitting by the porch, carefully weaving each strip by hand.
At Green Door, you may still notice these woven baskets — a small detail that quietly reflects the character of the region.
A small part of life in Cao Bằng — and also part of Green Door. 🌿

“Đắp nọi” – A Small Ending to the First Lunar Month

For the Tày people, the last day of the first lunar month is called “Đắp nọi” — a small celebration marking the close of the first month of the year.
In the Tày language, “đắp” refers to the last day of the month, while “nọi” means “small.”
Together, it describes a modest Tết that gently brings the first lunar month to an end.
During this time, families prepare offerings such as bánh g*i, bánh chưng, chicken, duck, pork, and fish — all carefully arranged on family altars and at village shrines as offerings to ancestors and local spirits.
It is a moment to bid farewell to the first month, to welcome the coming season, and to carry wishes for a peaceful and smooth year ahead.
It is also a chance for those who could not return home during Tết to reunite with their families.
At Green Door, these quiet days pass gently — a small ending, before a new season begins. 🌿

A Season for Cultural Explorers 🌿

If you are drawn to authentic local culture, the period from the first to the third lunar month is a time you should not miss in Cao Bằng.

While the golden rice season from August to October stands out for its scenery, early spring reveals the strongest sense of community life. The weather turns milder. The sharp winter cold fades, yet mornings remain cool. Light mist lingers over the pond before gentle sunlight settles in.

It is also common to come across lively gatherings along the way during this season. A village yard preparing for a festival. A circle of “ném còn” filled with laughter. Or a traditional “lày cỏ” game taking place in the village clearing. Community life unfolds naturally, not staged for tourism.

Green Door is not the most vibrant place in the area. It is where you can stay and experience that rhythm more deeply.
Green Door remains open and ready to welcome you
