Phố Hàng Vôi trước là đất của thôn cũ Kiếm Hồ và Tây Luông. Thời thuộc Pháp mang tên Rue de la Chaux gồm cả 2 phố: Hàng Vôi và phố Tông Đản.

Phố đi từ phố Lò Sũ nối liền phố Hàng Tre đến phố Ngô Quyền, Tông Đản thuộc quận Hoàn Kiếm. Phố này trước đây nằm sát bờ sông Hồng, tiện cho thuyền bè các nơi cập bến, bốc dỡ hàng nặng, có nhiều chỗ nung vôi và bán vôi, do đó có tên là Hàng Vôi.

Từ sau năm 1945 đến nay, tên Hàng Vôi được chính thức đặt cho phố này. Ngày nay, ngoài bến xe Hàng Vôi còn có Ngân hàng đầu tư được đặt ở phố này. Hiện nay, tại gác hai ngôi nhà số 7 còn đền thờ Lê Lợi.

Đền được cất khoảng năm 1920. Trước đây đền đặt ở quãng số nhà 20, 22 Lý Thái Tổ.

Đặc điểm địa lý: Phố có chiều dài 1,5 km. Phía Tây giáp với Hàng Tre, phía Đông Nam giáp với Tông Đản.

Các tuyến phố cắt ngang: Lê Lai - Ngô Quyền - Trần Nguyên Hãn - Lò Sũ.
