LAN HA BAY

Lying south and east of Cat Ba Town, the 300 or so karst islands and limestone outcrops of Lan Ha are just as beautiful as those of Halong Bay and have the additional attraction of numerous white-sand beaches.

Due to it being a fair way from Halong City, not so many tourist boats venture here, meaning Lan Ha Bay has a more isolated appeal. Sailing and kayak trips here are best organised in Cat Ba Town.

Geologically, Lan Ha is an extension of Halong Bay but sits in a different province of Vietnam. Around 200 species of fish, 500 species of mollusc, 400 species of arthropod, and numerous hard and soft coral live in the waters here, while larger marine animals in the area include seals and three species of dolphin.

The bay's admission fee is often incorporated into the cost of tours.

Halong Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay
Which one Should you Choose for your Cruise?

Halong Bay is so popular that it sees over 6 million annual visitors. The once pristine bay is now often so dirty that holidaymakers refuse to swim in it.

But there is a solution and Bai Tu Long Bay might just be the answer for you!

In this post, we will compare popular Halong Bay vs the quieter Bai Tu Long Bay.

Outlining the pros and cons of each, with tips on how to pick the best Ha Long Bay Cruise Company for your Vietnam holiday.

Wondering how to get to beautiful Halong Bay? This post can help you plan your transfer.

Halong Bay vs Bai Tu Long Bay
Let’s take a closer look at Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay, so that you can use this to your advantage when you get around to selecting your cruise company.

1. Touristy Halong Bay
Halong Bay is undoubtedly one of the most popular of places to see in Vietnam.

As a result, a rather staggering number of tourists end up having to compete for spots in the bay.

ha long bay vietnam first views

As a result, your view out of the Junk Boat window might be of just another boat.

You might also possibly find the water pollution pretty disappointing and you might end up getting frustrated with the masses of crowds around the popular sights.

What will you love about Halong Bay?
Halong Bay is in my opinion more beautiful in comparison to Bai Tu Long Bay, simply because the limestone islands are more densely packed in this area.
Halong Bay also has some beautiful sights to see. Some of the most popular are Surprise Cave and Titov Island. The journey through the cave, as the name suggests, will take you on an amazing adventure deep into the heart of one of the islands.
Here you will be left speechless whilst gazing around into the colourfully lit rugged cave interior. As to the Titov Island, this place will surprise you with stunning 360-degree views over the bay. This is one of the highest peaks in the bay and the best viewpoint to check out hundreds of islands from a birds-eye-like view.
What might you not be so fond of in Halong Bay?
Here, the hustle and bustle of tourism are quite pronounced. The islands themselves are densely positioned to one another, creating limited space for hundreds of cruise boats crowding around the main attractions. This, unfortunately, creates congestion in some parts of the bay and can take away from the feeling of peace & relaxation.
The water is polluted and it might be common to see trash from the boats floating past your window.

2. Peaceful Bai Tu Long Bay
This might be the first time you are hearing about Bai Tu Long Bay.

Bai Tu Long Bay is situated northeast of Halong Bay. Bai Tu Long Bay is basically Ha Long Bay’s unknown brother.

It is in fact, a perfect alternative to Halong Bay; a quiet place to enjoy some romantic time with your loved one, away from the heavily touristic sites.

What will you love about Bai Tu Long Bay?
Bai Tu Long Bay is Halong Bay’s big brother. This area covers a staggering three-quarters of the whole UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bai Tu Long Bay is still running under the tourism radar, which means that this bay is much less congested by boats and the waters of the bay are much cleaner from pollution.
Bai Tu Long Bay is a peaceful oasis for both visitors and locals alike. Thanks to the cruise companies’ strong connection to the local culture and their way of life, you will be able to visit the floating villages for yourself as well.
Bai Tu Long has some beautiful attractions that can visit, including Cong Do area, Vung Vieng fishing village, Da Xep Park, Cong Dam area, Thien Canh Son cave and Tra Gioi beach.
What might you not be so fond of in Bai Tu Long Bay?
The islands of Bai Tu Long Bay are not as densely packed with Islands in comparison to Halong Bay, leaving a larger body of water in between the sections.
During windy weather, there is less protection from the waves, which in turn can cause the boat to rock a bit more. Results? Yup, a minor case of seasickness.
Things to consider before you go on the Cruise

Choosing the right cruise operator
Considering that Halong Bay is much more popular than Bai Tu Long Bay, it obviously has many cruise operators.

Therefore, you might be able to get better cruise deals, as well as have a larger selection of choices of boats.

Saying that our recommendation would be to choose the cruise boat that will visit both, Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay.

Not all cruise companies are allowed to venture into Bai Tu Long Bay, so your experience will be so much more peaceful (but most likely slightly more expensive as well).

How many days do you want to cruise for?
We found that in order to venture into Bai Tu Long Bay, we had to choose either a 2-night or 3-night cruise.

We personally enjoyed a 3 day/2night cruise and found that it was just the perfect amount of time to enjoy and really soak up the beauty and atmosphere of the two bays.

The 3-day/2-night cruises are more preferred because they give you time to enjoy the scenery during the day, relax at night with a cocktail and enjoy even more sightseeing during the following day.

Again, it gives you the chance to explore even more of the amazing places and go to the remote parts of the bays as well.

relaxing halong bay cruise
You could alternatively also choose a 1-night cruise or even a day cruise.

Just be aware that these cruise boats won’t have enough time to venture away from the crowds, however, you will still get to see the beauty of Halong Bay (if you don’t mind crowds).

Double check what’s included with the cruise
It is important to know whether food, activities, and transfers will be included in the cruise costs.

Some cruises might come across as dirt cheap, but when inclusions are compared to other companies you will quickly realize that you won’t save any money on those cruises after paying for the extras!

We prefer boats that include all food, activities and transfers, that way you can sit back and enjoy the cruise experience without having to fork out extra dollars around every corner.

Our Personal Recommendation
Our recommendation would be to choose the 3-day 2-night cruise that includes both the bays of Halong Bay, for its extraordinary sightseeing; as well as the stunning Bai Tu Long Bai, for its clean, emerald waters & beautiful sunsets. Do your research.

Send the company a quick email to ask them which bays they will cruise to.

Have a beautiful trip and enjoy the beauty of this spectacular part of Vietnam!

5 of the Best Places to Eat Street Food in Hanoi, Vietnam

1.Bánh Cuốn Gia Truyen
14 Pho Hang Ga | Old Quarter, Hanoi, Vietnam

Bánh cuốn is one of the city’s favorite breakfast items and essential to any list of must-try Hanoi street foods.
By itself, the pale white rice batter is silky smooth and soft but otherwise rather bland. Flavor and texture come from a filling of seasoned ground pork, mushrooms, and shallots. The rice noodle roll is served with a separate bowl of clear amber dipping sauce, nước chấm, which is essentially fish sauce.

2.Banh Tom Ho Tay
1 Thanh Nien, Truc B_ch, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi, Vietnam

Banh Tom is another Vietnamese dish originating from Hanoi. It’s made of battered and deep-fried sweet potato and shrimp.

The bright orange color comes from the natural flesh of the sweet potato and a bit of turmeric powder in the batter. Often served as an appetizer, Banh Tom is commonly wrapped with lettuce, herbs, and pickled vegetables and dipped in nuoc mam cham dipping sauce.

3.Bia Hoi Ha Noi
9B TA Hien, Hanoi, Vietnam

Bia hoi is a special type of homemade beer, unpreserved, brewed daily and delivered in kegs to local businesses. Unlike canned or bottled beer, Bia hoi should be consumed the day after it leaves the factory. It’s brand-less and very cheap compared to Western-style beers.

Bia Hoi Ha Noi is a classic Vietnamese beer garden, perfect for late sunny afternoons. It’s well-shaded and has plenty of whirring fans to keep you cool.

4.Pho Gia Truyen
49 Bat Dan | Old Quarter, Hanoi, Vietnam

Locals form a long queue every morning at Pho Gia Truyen, the most famous place in the old quarter for a delicious bowl of Pho Bo.

Pho Bo is arguably the most well-known of all Vietnamese soups. It was inspired by French settlers who commonly ate beef, where Vietnamese traditionally preferred pork, chicken, and fish (whilst using cattle as work animals). Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the number of soup kitchens has risen significantly and Pho Bo has become the favorite dish for breakfast and dinner in Hanoi, and throughout Vietnam.

5.Madame Hien
15 Chan Cam, Hanoi, Vietnam

Located in the heart of the old quarter, Madame Hien is a stunning, century-old Hanoian villa dishing up meals that celebrate Vietnamese ancestral culture, artisanal foods, and regional knowledge accumulated over a thousand years. 7 best things to do in Hanoi Old Quarter

This guide of the best things to do in Hanoi Old Quarter is ideal for travellers looking to experience the rare sense of timelessness that seems to sum up this area of the city – you can still see glimpses of previous generations despite the modernisation that is going on relentlessly. This prominent district is relatively pedestrian-friendly compared to other cities in Vietnam - on weekends and evenings, the streets are closed off to motorised vehicles to make way for bia hoi bars and food stalls selling a variety of Vietnamese food. For a feel of rich old Vietnamese customs, you can also stroll along ancient commercial streets surrounding Hoan Kiem Lake, which are named after their original businesses dating back about 1,000 years. Located on the northern end of Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi Old Quarter’s most popular attractions comprise mostly quaint Buddhist shrines, street markets, and traditional Vietnamese arts.

1 Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre

Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, located along Dinh Tien Hoang Street, comprises 17 short sketches using traditional puppets within a one-hour performance. A Vietnamese orchestra accompanies each story, with musicians playing traditional operatic songs using drums, wooden bells, horns, bamboo flutes and cymbals. Aside from the general admission fee of VND 100,000, there's an additional camera or video fee if you wish to photograph or film the show. Tickets sell out well in advance so it’s worth booking yours as soon as you arrive in town.

Opening Hours: Daily 15:00, 16:10, 17:20, 18:30 & 20:00 Location: 57B, Dinh Tien Hoang Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

2 Hoan Kiem Lake & Ngoc Son Temple

Hoan Kiem Lake is where you can find locals jogging, enjoying a coffee and even practising Tai Chi and line dancing in Hanoi Old Quarter. This peaceful lake surrounds Ngoc Son Temple, an 18th century pagoda sitting in on a small island that’s accessible via an ornate wooden bridge. Inside the temple are several altars dedicated to military leader Tran Hung Dao, large bronze bust, some ancient artefacts including ceramics, and a preserved specimen of a giant turtle found in the lake weighing 250kg. Tickets to Ngoc Son Temple can be purchased at a booth in front of the bridge

Opening Hours: Daily 07:30 – 17:30 (Ngoc Son Temple) Location: Hanoi Old Quarter Price Range: VND 20,000 to enter the temple

3 D**g Xuan Market

D**g Xuan Market is the largest market in Hanoi and has a wide array of products for sale over four floors. Located on the northern edge of the Old Quarter, it is an imposing Soviet-style building, surrounded on all sides by merchant shops and stalls. It is a rough-and-ready type of market (some might even say ‘dirty’), especially in the ground floor wet market area. However, head up the stairs and you will find cheap printed tees, bolts of fabric, school uniforms, luggage stalls and much more, all available at wholesale prices. It is quite an experience, even if you only leave with a pair of cheap sunglasses and a Vietnamese conical hat.

Opening Hours: Daily 06:00 - 19:00
Location: D**g Xuan Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

4 Saint Joseph Cathedral of Hanoi

Saint Joseph Cathedral of Hanoi is known as the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the city. Prior to the construction of the cathedral in 1886, the French occupation demolished Bao Thien Pagoda, an important Vietnamese temple that was built during the Ly Dynasty. Saint Joseph Cathedral of Hanoi was inspired by Notre Dame de Paris, boasting a neo-Gothic architectural style, twin bell towers, intricately-designed altar, and colourful paintings and stained-glass windows from France. Surrounded by plenty of trees and flowers, a statue of Mother Maria is also set within the courtyard in front of the cathedral.

Opening Hours: Daily 08:00 – 17:00
Location: 40 Nha Chung Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

5 Bach Ma Temple

Bach Ma Temple dates back to the 11th century, and is widely known as the oldest of its kind in Hanoi Old Quarter. Constructed during the reign of Emperor Ly Thai To, this small pagoda honours a white horse which locals believed had guided the emperor in constructing walls of the Hanoi Citadel. Bach Ma Temple has undergone several refurbishments throughout the years, where you can see colourful murals, a red-lacquered palanquin, the shrine of Confucius, and a phoenix altar that were added in the 18th century. Open daily, entrance is free of charge but do dress appropriately out of respect for the local monks and devotees.

Location: 76 Hang Buom Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

6 Maison Centrale Hanoi (Hoa Lo Prison)

Maison Centrale in Hanoi, also known as Hoa Lo Prison and the ‘Hanoi Hilton’ housed Vietnamese revolutionaries and American POW during the Vietnam War. The fortress was once a vast colonial-style prison, most of which was torn down in the 1990s. Visiting today you will find the small southern section resting alongside a hotel and office complex. The prison is still a popular tourist attraction for those on the war history trail. Official records claim inmates numbered in their hundreds although it was not unknown for up to 2,000 prisoners to be crammed into a space reserved for 600 inmates.
