They have had a dream for some time to have their own piece of land on which they can live, grow their own fruit and veges, and operate a small ‘bed and breakfast’ business. A few months back they discovered the perfect 5000m2 property by chance. They had visited many available properties in the Long Thanh district just south of Saigon over the preceding months, but had not found the right propert
y. They had either been too big, too small, too expensive, too steep, too wet, or just not in a good location. They were getting a bit tired, and were about to give up the search when their young agent suggested they look at one last piece of land in Bau Can, just a little way off the main road. They accepted his suggestion and set off on the back of a couple of motor scooters under the hot Vietnamese sun. ‘I hope this will be worth it’ they both said to themselves.
‘This is it’, Jason said as they came to the end of a small dirt road, ‘This is it’! Ly and Jason stood at the top corner of the property...they could see just enough through the long weeds and overgrown trees to realise their search had come to an end. Further investigation only reinforced their initial feeling. This was their land...it had waited for them...they had been searching for it...and now they had been introduced. Negotiations can be a drawn out affair in Vietnam, even if one party is very keen to sell, and the other very keen to buy. At the first meeting Jason was ordered by Ly to hide in the back of the car, and not to let the seller see him…’any sniff of a foreigner and they will want double the price’ Ly advised him. But all went relatively smoothly, and within a week or so the final price was agreed, the documents signed, and Ly, Jason, and the land, became one :)
