Indigosnail Online Boutique
My name is Sue and I am from the Sapa Valley in Northern Vietnam. I am from the Hmong ethnic group and, as many of the women in my community, I am the carrier of my traditional culture. I am a trekking guide and run a homestay with my family in Ta Van village.
We, Black Hmong people, can be distinguished from the other ethnic groups of the region by many customs and traditional but the most obvious distinction is our clothing. Indigo, a regional indigenous plant, along with h**p and once silk are all resources we Hmong people have crafted into precious textiles of international acclaim. Intricate embroidery, h**p cloth, indigo dyeing and batik are all specialties that are second nature to the women in our community.
Since CoVid many of my community, who rely on tourism through lodgings, guiding or our handicrafts, are facing many challenges as visitors don’t come through Sapa valley for the moment or foreseeable future. However, I have decided to create an e-commerce were you can access our world acclaimed textiles and by doing so directly support our community.
Some of the items are from my collection, some made by the hands of my mother and mother in law. But the creation of this boutique has come to fruition fueled by the interest of many women from region who are asking for help.
Each item will be fully described. Note how they are made, there are some truly special techniques, and know that all textile creation is a time consuming and caring act. I aim to give you as much information as I can and know for each item. Some of the women who are asking for help are offering to sell their traditional clothes several generations old. Other items are made by hand today.
Fear not, the best of my collection I am keeping aside and they will not leave the valley. Someday, I hope to create a museum of traditional Hmong culture in Ta Van village where I live, to share the Hmong customs and culture through our magnificent textiles.
Please feel free to ask any questions or come forward with requests. I’d love to share my culture with you.
Sue
