Murphy Cove is a 7th generation coastal fishing village rooted in history as a hub of boat building, blacksmithing and rum running. Relax at our community campfire with a plate of complimentary freshly steamed mussels and listen to the strum of a guitar, tales of local folklore and the nearby waves of the Atlantic Ocean. A sea-lover's paradise! Come visit and enjoy a slice of old fashioned Nova Scotia hospitality!

Throwback Thursday!

Last weeks post featured a postcard picture of 4 children sitting on the whale skull bone at the campground.
I asked if anyone had more details and Andre Beaver shared the following:

"The large Right whale washed up on Inner Baltic island. My Dad found him while hauling his traps. Myself and Dad went out with his 20 ft. boat with a putt putt motor , Leigh Murphy (Ryan's Grandfather Leigh started the campground in 1960) had a 26 ft. boat with a car motor. The whale had already broken up, while they loaded some vertebrae into the boats I walked around the point and found that bone sticking out just off shore. My Dad hooked onto it but couldn't move it but Leigh finally got it to move and he towed it back home . Keith (Leigh's son) was with him. Another man by the name of Bert Cooper towed rib bones home and framed his driveway with them on Masons point road. I'm thinking I was 6-8 so 68 or 70." Thank you Andre!

The year was 1960 and Murphy's Camping on the Ocean was welcoming its first guests.

Here is an old postcard with a picture of children sitting on a whale skull. The picture was taken at the campground and yes, the skull is still here.
Does anyone know where?

Throwback Thursday!
The Year Was 1960 and Murphy's Camping on the Ocean welcomed it's very first guests.

We are looking for photos of your visits to Murphy's Camping or other communities along the Eastern Shore in the 1960's.
Do you have a picture you would like to share?
Here is a great memory sent to us by Barbara M taken in perhaps 1971-72 during a trip to the East Coast. The marina looks very much as it does today but there aren't many trees up along the shore by site #35.

THE YEAR WAS 1960 and Murphy's Camping on the Ocean welcomed it's very first guests.

Scotties potato chips, produced by Acadia Foods in Centreville Nova Scotia, were 5 cents a bag and BEEP Fruit Drink created by Farmers Co-operative Dairy in Bedford was about to become a lunchtime favourite.

Here is another old postcard identified as having been taken on The Eastern Shore. Unfortunately they don't identify the community. Does anyone recognize it?

THE YEAR WAS 1960 and Murphy's Camping on the Ocean welcomed its very first guests!

The top car models in 1960 are the Chevrolet Corvair, winning Motor Trends Car of the Year, the Rambler Ambassador an American rival for compact efficient imports such as the Volkswagen Beetle. The Chevy Impala was another popular sedan, while the Jaguar E-Type and Corvette Stingray added to the diverse automotive landscape.

Postcards like this of Seaman's Bay Restaurant in Tangier are popular with travelers.
While the building is still there it's no longer a restaurant. Does anyone remember eating there? Other than lobster, what was on the menu?

We're launching our winter dome experiences! Our domes will be available for winter stays beginning January 8th.

While we await our winter photoshoot, we decided AI could help in the interim.

Me: ‘Snow on the trees, please.’
AI: ‘Absolutely—also on the chairs, the rug, the table…’
For the record: it does not snow inside the dome. 😂

You can check out the other AI altered photos on our booking page: https://resnexus.com/resnexus/reservations/book/3F2E0548-1E31-4D93-8526-6A3ECAB42F29

The Year Was 1960 and Murphy's Camping welcomed its very first guests!

Canada’s highway system was transforming how people traveled. The completion of major sections of the Trans-Canada Highway made long-distance road travel practical for the first time, opening rural and coastal regions to families eager to explore beyond their hometowns.

In Nova Scotia, expanding and improving provincial highways changed the rhythm of travel:
Highway 102 connected Halifax more directly to northern Nova Scotia
Highway 103 improved access to the South Shore
Highway 7, running along the Eastern Shore, became a scenic coastal route for travelers seeking ocean views, quiet communities, and outdoor adventure.
This era marked the growth of campgrounds, roadside cabins, and small locally run destinations.

When this picture appeared in a social media post many suggested it is Spry Bay. What do you think?
2026 is coming fast! Don't forget to book before the end of 2025 to be entered to win a "100 Islands, 100 Minutes" adventure tour with Ryan Murphy.

THE YEAR WAS 1960.
Murphy's Camping welcomed its very first guests.

The Owls Head Lighthouse stood to the west of the entrance to Ship Harbour, perched on a rocky headland jutting out into the passage between Owls Head, Little Harbour and the outer islands, serving as a guiding beacon fishermen navigating safely in and out of the harbour.
First lit in 1912, it was replaced between 1966 and 1970 by a skeleton tower.
The first lightkeeper was Clarence "Cliff" Hutt, then John Palmer (28 years), Donald Mason, and the last lightkeeper, Fred DeBaie.
Date: [ca. 1960]

Do you have memories or photos of the Eastern Shore from this time that you would like to share?
A reminder to book before the end of 2025 and you will be entered to win a "100 Islands, 100 Minutes" adventure tour, ($250 value)
