More badgers must mean fewer hedgehogs. The implications for hedgehog survival of a tenfold increase in badger numbers are serious. The badger's claws are long enough to reach the skin between the hedgehog's spines, and its forepaws are strong enough to rip even an adult hedgehog open. It also goes without saying that any badger will simply hoover up any nest of newborn hoglets it comes across.

Researchers from Oxford University predicted the absence of hedgehogs from areas where there are more than 2.27 setts per 10 sq km. In the 1980's there were 4.51 setts per 10 sq km in the South West of England. Badger numbers have increased enormously since then.

One badger eats the same amount of food as seven hedgehogs. So you can add 'competing for food' to the dire consequences for hedgehog survival when there are so many badgers around.

Where badgers were culled in amenity grassland areas, hedgehog numbers more than doubled in five years.

RSPCA appeals for dogs to be kept on leads after sheep killed

The RSPCA is urging dog owners to always keep their pets on leads near livestock after four sheep from the same flock died in recent months.
Two sheep were savaged to death and a further two fell to their death after being attacked by loose dogs in the Peak District in Derbyshire.
