Armoy - St Patrick's Church

A favorite location of mine both in landscape and atmosphere, I always get a sense of being somewhere special when I visit here. After reading all I could find about the history of this area the reason why became clear.

With a history and heritage that reaches back to the first human settlements, through ancient folklore to the beginnings of Christianity, you will discover stories of saints, kings, Viking raiders and scholars, all having left an invisible imprint on this area.

The windy road below is the Glenshesk Road which has been designated as one nine loop drives off the main Causeway Coastal Route. The Glenshesk/Glentaisie Scenic Drive goes from Ballycastle around Knocklayd mountain and back to Ballycastle.

The crossroads in the photo just below the church is where the drive officially turns right along the Lagg Road but if you go straight on it will bring you to the village of Armoy which is well worth a visit.

Causeway Coastal Route over St. Patrick's at Armoy

The lush greenery of North Antrim, below is St. Patrick's Church and Round Tower. In the far distance is Rathlin Island and the Scottish Isles. The cross roads beside the church: heading north, the Lag Road which techically is where the Glenshesk Scenic Route which loops around Knocklayd turns right before another right turn into Glentaisie. I would advise people to drive on into Armoy village and then travel on the main road to where the Lag Road joins it, you can then continue on the Glkenskesk Scenic Route through Glentaisie.

The Lag Road and the road into Armoy forms part of the race track for the Armoy Road Races. Armoy is also the closest village to the Dark. Hedges.

The road heading south will take you toward Loughguile and Sheans Horse Farm and Heritage Centre.

Some nice self catering accommodation around Armoy at Limepark, Knocknahinch and Pharis Smithy. Follow the tags here or visit the accommodation link from my website where there is more information about the area:

Causeway Coastal Route at Armoy

The characteristic rural church of St Patrick at Armoy complete with the remains of an 9th century round tower.

This area was, according to several scholars, given to Saint Patrick (Patricius) by a king of Dalriada after Patrick returned to Ireland, having previously escaped from enforced slavery near Slemish.

Evidence for 6th century habitation has come from recent, require excavations prior to the extension of the church graveyard. There has still not been any significant archaeological investigation of the wider site. Many scholars believe this was an important Abbey and monastic settlement founded during or shortly after Patricius death and that the site had strong links to both Clonmacnoise and Lindisfarne.

The road which sweeps around the church forms part of the track for the Armoy Road Races which take place every year, this year it will be on July 29th and 30th. In my opinion one of the best road racing events on the calendar. Very down to earth with a great atmosphere and good for spectators.

The race was brought about by a dedicated team of supporters to mark and celebrate the Armoy Armada, a group of young men who developed into road racing legends, they worked and tested their bikes in and around the village of Armoy.

If you thinking of a summer break to explore this beautiful landscape from then you will find self catering accommodation locally at:-

Armoy is also the closest village to the Dark Hedges and part of the Glenshesk Scenic Drive which loops off the main Causeway Coastal Route at Ballycastle.
