A Hunt We Will Never Forget 🐃🙏

Our second buffalo charge in the past 10 days turned into an experience we will never forget, like the one last week.

Late one afternoon, Allen and I shot an amazing, hard boss buffalo. As the rest of the herd of Buffalo bulls ran off, I heard another buffalo running away that sounded like it had also been hit. We followed the tracks for a short distance, and my suspicion was confirmed. Unfortunately, darkness caught up with us, so we had no choice but to continue the next morning.

Early the following morning, Allen, Martin, Joel, Abraham the hound, and I picked up the tracks again of the second Buffalo. We followed them for several hours, and Abraham managed to corner the buffalo a few times. Eventually, we entered some extremely thick bush.

I was in front, with Allen and Martin about three meters behind me, when we just heard a bellow from the Buffalo, that sound that makes all your hair standing up on your back, when suddenly, at roughly eight meters, the buffalo burst out of the bush straight towards us.
Everything happened in seconds. There was no time to think.

I dropped to my knee to get my rifle into position. Thankfully, I had my .458 with open sights, and I managed to get the first shot in just below the eye. The buffalo went down only about a meter from my knee.
As it went down, Allen and Martin were able to get their shots in as well. Even while I was on my knee, I could still see its eye following us and the steam coming from its nose.

That was a moment we will never forget.
And if you think grown men don’t cry, think again.

There was only one thing we could do at that moment. We immediately formed a circle and thanked our Mighty Saviour, Jesus Christ, for protecting us and bringing us through that moment.

As Allen said afterwards, “Now we are brothers for life.”
I’ve been through a few intense experiences over the years, but this one is definitely also one for the books.

Moments like this make you stop, think, and appreciate every single second of life.

A Close Encounter With Buffalo 🐃
We had two very close encounters with Buffalo over the past two weeks on two different hunts. But first, I want to share the story of the first one.

We wounded a Buffalo late one afternoon and went back on the tracks early the next morning. As everyone knows, the bush is extremely thick this year because of the rains , making the tracking even more challenging.

After following the tracks for a few hours, I noticed that Tarentaal, one of my dogs, started acting nervous. I immediately told Joel, my faithful tracker, that we needed to be alert.

Not even a second later, the Buffalo came charging out of the thick bush!

By the grace of God, Mark and I managed to drop the Buffalo just 10 metres away from us..It was an incredibly close call, and we are deeply thankful that everyone made it out safely.

These are the moments that remind you just how powerful and unpredictable these animals are, and how quickly a hunt can change.

I had the privilege of spending some amazing time in the bush with three great friends from America. The memories made around the camp, in the bush, and out hunting together are what make these experiences so special.

This is only the first picture I’m sharing from this father-and-son hunt… there are many more memories and stories to come.
