But did you know there's actually a pretty interesting story behind it.
If you know this harbour, you will know the slipway, but before it was built, Arnistonโs fishermen were launching their boats straight from the beach, using wooden rollers to get the heavier boats over the sand and into the water.
Now I can only imagine what a struggle that must've been... hauling a heavy fishing boat over sand and into the sea, especially before youโd even started the dayโs fishing!
And apparently, getting back to shore could be just as important as getting out, because the first boat back had the best chance of selling its entire catch, so it seems like it was a bit of a race back to the beach too.
In the late 1920's motorised fishing boats started appearing in Arniston, and by 1936 the slipway had been built, making life a whole lot easier for the fishermen.
Today, beautiful Arniston/ Waenhuiskrans is still home to a fishing community, although fishing is on a much smaller scale than it once was. ๐ฃ ๐
