From the early 1970's, Don Lowe and Gary Byerly have spent their research years on annual visits to study the geology of the Barberton Mountains. In 2004 Don and Gary adopted Old Coach Road as a second home on their visits to South Africa. Now that retirement calls, we wish them well. Don and Gary, Lili and I will miss you dearly and hope our paths cross sometime in the future

The tidal sandstones of the Makhonjwa mountain range tell the story of ancient beaches, tides and some of the earliest life.

White tidal sands like these also tells us that the moon was much closer to earth when this was formed, the tidal pull was stronger and the water rushing around the earth, with no land mass to slow it down, made for huge tidal water surges.

Visit the Tidal Sandstones along the Barberton road and learn about the spooky story of Sister Brown, the ghost of the provincial hospital and the hanging tree at the Bougainviilea Hotel.... 👻
