Protecting our horses comes first!

It’s vaccination time again at Mabalingwe as we protect our horses against African Horse Sickness (AHS), a serious viral disease affecting horses, donkeys and mules.

While AHS poses no risk to humans, it is spread to equines through infected midges, and with no current cure, prevention through vaccination is essential.

For the next 3 weeks, our horse riding time slots will be reduced to give our horses the rest they need while their bodies build up strong immunity following vaccination.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while we give our four-legged team the best possible care. 🐎🌿
Their health and wellbeing will always be our priority.

Our annual game count took to the skies this year, with a drone being used for the very first time to assist with the count across the Mabalingwe Reserve.

But why is a game count so important?

Understanding our wildlife populations is an essential part of responsible reserve management. A game count gives us valuable insight into the numbers and distribution of different species across the reserve, helping to inform important decisions around wildlife management, habitat and veld conditions, carrying capacity and the long-term health of our ecosystem.

This year, the team from WMK Wild joined us on Sunday night as we introduced an exciting new approach to our annual count. Using drone technology gave the team a different perspective from above and marked an exciting first for Mabalingwe.
