A little birdwatching goes a long way.

Mabula Private Game Reserve is home to a wonderful variety of birdlife, from colourful bee-eaters and striking hornbills to owls and ground-dwelling species that are easy to overlook if you aren’t paying attention.

A little bird with a beautifully detailed coat.

The Coqui francolin may blend into the bush at first glance, but take a closer look and its colours really stand out. Its mottled brown, grey and buff plumage creates a beautiful pattern that helps it camouflage among grasses and leaf litter, while the reddish facial skin adds a splash of colour.

Nature has a way of making even the smallest details worth noticing.

If you’re an elephant at Mabula Private Game Reserve, there’s plenty to fill your appetite.

Elephants are herbivores and spend much of their day feeding on grasses, leaves, bark, roots and twigs. Their diet changes with the seasons, too. When fresh grasses are plentiful, they’ll graze, while leaves and woody vegetation become important food sources at other times of the year.

With their enormous appetites, elephants can spend up to 18 hours a day feeding!

Small bird, big performance.

This rufous-naped lark is singing its little heart out, filling the bush with its distinctive call. Larks use their songs to communicate and defend their territories, and this little singer certainly seems determined to make itself heard.
